Warning: Mild SPOILERS lie ahead for Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair! It took 20 years for Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair to get off the ground, and creator Linwood Boomer cautions about expecting more right away.
The Disney+ and Hulu series serves as a sequel revival to the seven-time Emmy-winning sitcom, centering on an adult Malcolm as he tries to keep his new life with his teenage daughter and new girlfriend a secret from his family. However, as Hal and Lois prepare for an epic party to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary, Malcolm finds himself roped back into the dysfunctional chaos of his original family.
Ahead of the show’s premiere, ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns interviewed Linwood Boomer and Tracy Katsky to discuss Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair. When asked about the potential for a season 2 of the revival, Boomer confirmed he views the new show as “a one-and-done,” acknowledging that “it wouldn’t have happened otherwise with Bryan [Cranston]” given his busy schedule with “many giant movies and Broadway starring roles,” to which Katsky chuckled and joked, “He’s very fancy.”
The creator went on to explain that “Frankie is busy with so many different things,” which would make developing a schedule for a full series with both of them trickier. However, the Emmy winner does acknowledge that bringing the show back was “a really fun experience” and the door isn’t entirely closed for the sitcom’s future:
Linwood Boomer: I think things would have to line up in a very particular way for that to happen. I don’t know that I’ll be around if it takes another 17 years for it to happen, but maybe one of my kids will do it.
In another interview with ScreenRant, director Ken Kwapis confessed that during his production on the revival “it didn’t occur to me to think ahead” about the show’s future. However, going back after the fact, the franchise vet acknowledged that there is a wealth of material for Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair to explore in another season:
Ken Kwapis: When I watch it, and especially watching the new relationships — Malcolm and Leah, Malcolm and Tristan, and also Kelly’s relationship both to Malcolm and to the family — it makes me yearn to develop those stories, and those relationships further. And just again, the chemistry between Kiana and Keeley and Frankie is just so delicious. And Vaughan, she’s just sparkles. She feels like an old style movie star to me.
Development on the Malcolm in the Middle revival memorably took quite a while to get off the ground, with Cranston being one of the biggest champions for the new series as he frequently talked about his interest in a revival. Muniz even shared that, at one point, Cranston was penning a script for a movie reunion, with Boomer reportedly being one of the reasons for the delay, as Muniz indicated they were waiting for his blessing to move ahead without him.
As Boomer recently shared with ScreenRant, part of the 20-year wait for a Malcolm in the Middle revival simply stemmed from his not having any ideas for how to bring the beloved sitcom back, having put them all into its original run and he was happily enjoying retirement. This eventually changed when he turned to reflecting on how his own life has changed in the time since the original series ended, bringing the show into the modern era with the titular character now a father.
While he may have envisioned the revival as a one-and-done situation for the time being, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair does leave plenty of room for a season 2 and beyond should Boomer decide to return, or pass the baton to others. The ending saw Kiana Madeira’s Tristan reveal she had been keeping some secrets about her own past from Muniz’s titular protagonist, and while not negatively impacting their relationship, a new season could properly expound on this backstory.
Additionally, Christopher Masterson’s Francis and Emy Coligado’s Piama have found their way back to living with Hal and Lois, all while trying to get pregnant and start a family of their own. Plus, with Vaughan Murrae’s Kelly trying to figure out their future after high school, Malcolm’s daughter Leah adjusting to having her new family to lean on, and Dewey, now played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, largely pulled away from the proceedings due to his concert pianist career, there are plenty of avenues for a new season to go.
Why Malcolm In The Middle’s Revival Is Recasting Dewey After 19 Years
An iconic original cast member who starred in Malcolm in the Middle won’t be returning for the upcoming Disney reboot of the classic 2000s sitcom.
Beyond Boomer’s own interest, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair season 2 does have to get enough viewership for 20th Television and Hulu/Disney+ to consider producing further seasons. The streamers have had some success with sequel revivals of hit sitcoms, particularly the recent King of the Hill season 14, and revivals as a whole often find themselves earning multiple seasons.
It also helps that Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is garnering largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, currently holding an 80% “Certified Fresh” approval rating from the former and 72% from the latter on Rotten Tomatoes. This could help lead to enough positive word-of-mouth to lead to the revival being a smash hit, and the studio and streamer, at the very least, being confident to start early talks with Boomer about bringing the show back for more.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is now streaming in its entirety on Hulu and Disney+.
