Liam Neeson’s new sci-fi movie is heating up on streaming after a slow theatrical run.
Though his 40-year film career spans several genres, Neeson has starred in several sci-fi films, most famously as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999). His cosmic repertoire also includes Krull (1983), Battleship (2012), Men in Black: International (2019), and more. Now, Neeson’s new sci-fi film, which features plenty of “gooey splatter,” is finding new life on streaming.
After a quiet theatrical run, Cold Storage is surging on streaming. Directed by Jonny Campbell, with a script written by David Koepp based on his own 2019 novel, the new sci-fi film stars Liam Neeson as a former bioterrorism agent who is called back into action alongside two young employees when a highly dangerous fungus escapes from a secret laboratory.
Now, Cold Storage is No. 4 on the Top 10 overall movies and TV shows on MGM+ in the United States for today, July 16. It ranks below The Westies in first, From, Project Hail Mary, and above Protector, A Working Man, The Institute, Robin Hood, Transformers: The Last Knight, and Tropic Thunder.
The cast also includes Georgina Campbell, Joe Keery, Sosie Bacon, Vanessa Redgrave, Lesley Manville, Darrell D’Silva, Daniel Rigby, Rob Collins, Ellora Torchia, Andrew Brooke, Richard Brake, Aaron Heffernan, and Gavin Spokes.
Cold Storage received mostly positive reviews, resulting in an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where its “Critics Consensus” reads, “A smart but familiar B-movie throwback, Cold Storage delivers campy performances, gooey splatter, and wry sci-fi wit with infectious enthusiasm.” It also has a 75% audience score.
Released in the United States on February 13, Cold Storage had a quiet theatrical run, grossing just over $4 million at the box office against an estimated production budget of approximately $10 million, though some reports suggest a higher figure closer to $30 million.
While Cold Storage may have stumbled in theaters, its strong streaming performance suggests audiences are finally discovering the fun and creature-filled sci-fi adventure it always aimed to be.
