The cricketing landscape in Europe is about to undergo a seismic shift as the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL) gears up for its much-anticipated debut. In a grand launch event held on Monday, May 11, 2026, the league officially unveiled its full roster of six city-based franchises, each backed by a constellation of international sporting legends and business icons.
Scheduled to run from August 26 to September 20, 2026, the ETPL is a collaborative venture between Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland, and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association. The tournament aims to transform the continent into a premier destination for short-format cricket, bridging the gap between associate nations and global powerhouses.

The spotlight of the launch event shone brightest on the Dublin franchise, which revealed its high-profile ownership. In a move that has sent ripples through the global cricket community, Rahul Dravid, the legendary former Indian captain and World Cup-winning coach, was announced as the owner of the Dublin Guardians.
The Wall of Indian cricket is not just lending his name but a profound long-term vision to the franchise. Dravid expressed that his primary motivation for joining the ETPL was the opportunity to strengthen grassroots development across Ireland and Europe. He emphasized that the region possesses a passionate cricketing community with untapped potential.
Adding more Indian flavour to the Irish side, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been named the captain of the Dublin Guardians. Under Dravid’s mentorship and Ashwin’s tactical brilliance, the Dublin-based team is already being touted as a heavy favourite for the inaugural title.
Other big names joining hands in ETPL
The ETPL has managed to attract an unprecedented level of investment from current and former cricketing greats, ensuring each franchise carries a distinct superstar identity. Beyond the Dublin Guardians, the ownership groups for the remaining five teams read like a Hall of Fame list:
- Belfast (Irish Wolves): Co-owned by Australian explosive batter Glenn Maxwell and Rohan Lund.
- Amsterdam (Amsterdam Flames): Backed by former Australian captain Steve Waugh, hockey icon Jamie Dwyer, and Tim Thomas.
- Edinburgh (Edinburgh Castle Rockers): Owned by a New Zealand-heavy consortium including Kyle Mills, Nathan McCullum, and Rachel Wiseman.
- Glasgow (Glasgow Cosmic/Mugafians): Co-owned by the Universe Boss Chris Gayle and Vipul Aggarwal.
- Rotterdam (Rotterdam Dockers): Features a powerhouse ownership group including Jonty Rhodes, Faf du Plessis, and Glashin and Samir Shah, with Madhukar Shree as the managing partner.
The league is further bolstered by the presence of Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan, a co-founder and co-owner of the league, who has been instrumental in bringing Indian commercial interest to European shores.
Fans can expect high-octane action on the field as well, with international stalwarts like Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Santner, Liam Livingstone, and Heinrich Klaasen confirmed to participate. With 33 matches spread across Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam, the ETPL is set to be the defining cricket event of the 2026 European summer.
