The Legend of Zelda is one of the largest and most important franchises in gaming history, not only setting a new standard for action-adventure titles but also introducing brand-new mechanics that have been picked up by the entire industry. Several titles pay homage to the series, be they the classic entries or the newest installments. Now, in the light of Zelda’s 40th anniversary celebrations in 2026, a new game seems to be paying tribute to the iconic franchise.
A new indie game by the name Under the Island is a 2D action-adventure title that heavily resembles older Zelda games set in that style – unlike the more recent Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom games, for example. As seen on Steam, the title is developed by Slime King Games, and neither its release date nor its release window has been announced or teased just yet. Even so, this looks like a promising new game to look forward to, especially for Zelda fans.

The demo is an example of what you can expect from the final version of Under the Island, once it comes out. This augmented playtime will likely be echoed by the final version of this upcoming Zelda-like game.
Under The Island Looks Adorable
The Game Follows Nia On Seashell Island
Even though there is a lot to be seen, Under the Island already looks amazing and incredibly adorable. The title does not explicitly take inspiration from older Zelda games, but it is based on 2D action-adventure games of the 1990s, which is when the older 2D Zelda games thrived. In the game, you’ll control Nia as she explores Seashell Island.
You’ll solve puzzles, face monsters, and meet remarkable characters – all of these activities are highly reminiscent of older Zelda games, though it does seem like Under the Island was able to establish its own style and charm. This new Steam game does seem to have enough to be its own thing, without leaning into being a tribute to The Legend of Zelda, and it’s one that should be on your radar.
