The news that KPop Demon Hunters is coming back later this year is tempered by the revelation that the franchise’s long-awaited sophomore outing won’t cover any new territory in terms of plot. While Netflix’s upcoming Ghostbusters spinoff series Night Shift sounds fun, there can be no doubt about which animated horror/ comedy/ fantasy franchise about unlikely heroes fighting supernatural beings is currently the streaming service’s most famous and successful.
Released in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters is an animated fantasy movie about the Kpop girl group Huntrix, who are successful singers by day and demon hunters by night. Rumi, Mira, and Zoey are compelling characters in their own right, but the Netflix movie ingeniously pits them against a rival boy band, the Saja Boys, who just so happen to secretly be demons. The winner of both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the Academy Awards, KPop Demon Hunters was a massive critical hit.
However, the movie was also a record-smashing success at Netflix, becoming the platform’s most-watched movie in the year since its release. In the wake of the success of KPop Demon Hunters, it has become increasingly clear that animated family films will be a big part of Netflix’s most high-profile content as the streaming service attempts to replicate this success. However, updates on a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters specifically have been sparse.
KPop Demon Hunters: The Official Screen Comic Boxed Set Retells The Original Movie’s Story
In news that will come as both a joy and a letdown for fans of the movie, it was recently revealed that Penguin Random House and Netflix will release the comic compendium KPop Demon Hunters: The Official Screen Comic Boxed Set in early November 2026. At 704 pages, KPop Demon Hunters: The Official Screen Comic Boxed Set will be a massive tome, but readers shouldn’t expect anything in the way of new content.
Screen comics use high-quality stills from animated movies to retell their stories as comics, meaning the book won’t necessarily feature new artwork and certainly won’t delve into new storylines involving Huntrix. Since the ending of Kpop Demon Hunters made for a perfect self-contained story, as evidenced by the historic popularity of the movie, it makes sense that the franchise’s first comic book release wouldn’t jeopardize this success with a new plot.
The KPop Demon Hunters Franchise Isn’t Moving Onto A New Story Yet
That said, fans will expect the KPop Demon Hunters franchise to move beyond the original movie’s story eventually, as great as the 2025 release may have been. Whether it is a sequel movie, a series, or a spinoff focused on new characters within the same fictional universe, the world of KPop Demon Hunters is full of opportunities to tell new and original stories.
The creators of the series need look no further than Disney’s similarly acclaimed fusion of horror, comedy, and fantasy, the two-season masterpiece Gravity Falls, to see how this story extension could look in the medium of comics. In the decade since the series officially ended in 2016, both the 2018 graphic novel Gravity Falls: Lost Legends and the 2024 novel The Book of Bill expanded its fictional universe without marring the reputation of the original show.
It makes sense for the creators of the franchise to play it safe with the release of KPop Demon Hunters: The Official Screen Comic Boxed Set, as this is the first release from the series since the original movie came out in 2025. However, as the franchise’s original movie gets older, viewers will anticipate more from the universe of the series, and KPop Demon Hunters comics could allow the franchise to expand its storyline without immediately jumping into new movies, thus taking pressure off its eventual screen sequels.
