Kevin Pietersen has returned to the England setup after more than a decade away from international cricket. The former batter was recently appointed as a specialist mentor for the white-ball teams ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. Pietersen has now revealed that he has also spoken with Test coach Stephen Fleming about potentially helping England ahead of the next Ashes series. However, he admitted that his schedule could prevent him from taking on a larger role with the red-ball side.

Pietersen confirmed that he has already discussed a potential Ashes role with Fleming. While he is open to helping England, he does not expect to spend significant time inside the Test dressing room. He added that there is plenty of time before the Ashes for conversations to take place and revealed that Fleming has already discussed the kind of language he would like Pietersen to use with England’s Test batters.

“I’ve got a pretty mad schedule, (but) I wouldn’t say no. I’ve certainly had conversations with Flem about language that he would like me to use with the Test batters, going into South Africa, and then certainly into the summer next year,” Pietersen told reporters.

England will host Australia in the Ashes from June 18 to August 2, 2027. The two sides will also meet in a one-off pink-ball Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March.

Pietersen reflects on England comeback

Pietersen also looked back on his return to the England fold more than a decade after his international career ended in controversial circumstances. The former middle-order batter scored nearly 14,000 runs across all three formats for England. His international career ended in 2014 after the team suffered a 5-0 Ashes whitewash in Australia. Now back around the England setup, Pietersen said he has moved on from that period.

“I’m 46, man. That stuff’s so long gone. I’m a completely different person too,” he concluded.

Pietersen’s first series in his new role ended with England completing a 3-0 T20I whitewash of Sri Lanka, helping them move to the top of the T20 world rankings. With Joe Root now taking over the Test captaincy from Ben Stokes, Pietersen could also have an opportunity to share his experience with England’s red-ball setup ahead of the Ashes.
