Jos Buttler added another major milestone to his international career during England’s second ODI against Sri Lanka at Leeds. The England captain became the first England cricketer to surpass 10,000 runs across men’s limited-overs internationals. Buttler scored 69 off 49 balls, hitting five fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 140.82 before retiring hurt. His contribution could not prevent England from losing by 16 runs, with Sri Lanka posting 321/6 before England finished on 305/9.

Buttler’s innings took his combined ODI and T20I tally to 10,062 runs from 367 matches and 326 innings. He has scored 13 centuries and 60 fifties across the two formats, becoming the first England batter to reach the landmark. In ODIs, Buttler has accumulated 5,678 runs from 204 matches and 176 innings at an average of 39.15 and a strike rate of 115.54.

His record includes 11 centuries and 30 fifties, making him England’s third-highest run-scorer in the format. He has also scored 4,384 runs in 163 T20Is at an average of 34.79 and a strike rate of 150.13. His T20I record includes two centuries and 30 fifties.

Buttler joins elite group of white-ball run-scorers

By crossing 10,000 runs across ODIs and T20Is, Buttler has joined an exclusive group featuring several of the most prolific white-ball batters in international cricket. Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Ricky Ponting, David Warner, Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya are among those to have reached the mark. Mahela Jayawardene, Chris Gayle, Brian Lara, AB de Villiers, Jacques Kallis and Martin Guptill are also part of the group.

Buttler’s entry is particularly notable given his scoring rate, with his ODI strike rate above 115 and T20I strike rate above 150. The milestone came only a week after Buttler became the first batter to reach 15,000 runs in all T20 cricket, including franchise competitions. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis also reached a landmark in the same match by completing 5,000 ODI runs during his 121-run innings.
