Jensen Ackles Responds To Chances

Countdown star Jensen Ackles has responded to the show’s season 2 renewal chances, following season 1’s cliffhanger ending. Prime Video’s American crime drama series debuted on Prime on June 25, 2025, with a 13-epsiode first season, and Countdown‘s explosive finale episode aired September 3, 2025, leaving plenty of anticipation for the chances of a second season renewal.

The cast of Countdown is headed up by Ackles, with Jessica Camacho, Violet Beane, and Eric Dean in supporting roles. Countdown follows a cop with an inoperable brain tumor, who investigates a murder, and is drawn into a conspiracy that threatens the lives of millions. Following season 1’s cliffhanger ending, Ackles discussed the chances of Countdown returning for season 2.

Per Variety, Ackles discussed the trajectory of his character, as well as how season 1’s storyline being wrapped up in time to set up a new case means there should be a seamless transition to season 2. He mentioned that he (and showrunner) Derek Haas have discussed a possible future direction for the character of Meachum.

He also addresses the show’s 10-month time jump, and what has happened to Meachum in that time, as well as hinting that this is something the should could look to flesh out in a second season. Check out Ackles’ comments below:

Derek and I have talked about whether or not we’re going to get an opportunity to shed light on that void and see the things that he was doing. But I think for the most part, he had a drive to get back on his feet, get back to work, and get back to doing the thing that he loves doing, and it was probably a struggle for him. He didn’t want anybody to see that struggle, because that’s the kind of person he is. So he struggled quietly and got back to being capable of doing what he needs to do. But what that looked like, we haven’t discussed in-depth, but I feel like there might be some cool things that we can reveal if given the opportunity.

What This Means For Countdown Season 2

Ackles’ comments suggest that the chances of a Countdown season 2 renewal seem pretty inevitable at this stage, it is simply a matter of when. The show has been set up to build toward season 2, and there are plenty of story arcs that could be explored for Countdown season 2, such as Olivera’s fate, and the status of Meachum’s condition.

There could be a deep dive into exactly what Meachum did during the show’s time jump, what his physical condition is, and how this looks set to impact his ability to do his job. The fact that Ackles and Haas have already held discussions over what might happen in season 2 suggests this is something that they have planned for some time.

Our Take On Countdown Season 2’s Prospects

A show full of action, drama, and suspense, Countdown is one of the best action series on Prime Video, and a love letter to the genre. Haas is clearly an action junkie, and the world he has created is sprawling enough to expand beyond a single season, making a season 2 renewal even more likely to happen.

Countdown season 1 has only just concluded, so it could be a few weeks before a decision is made, but the chances of the show returning seem high, particularly from a narrative standpoint. The fact Meachum is dying, however, means that there is a limit to where Countdown can go, and how long it can run beyond season 2.
