The Harry Potter franchise is officially entering a new era, marking the end of its current one. For over two decades, the Harry Potter movies have been the definitive way to view the Wizarding World. Despite being based on the Harry Potter books, which typically gives adaptations a huge core group of dedicated fans, the movie franchise transcended that to become a worldwide phenomenon in its own right.
All Wizarding World projects beyond movies prove as much; the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks located across the globe have used design elements from the films, from the Hogwarts Express and the castle itself to surrounding locations like Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. Then there are Harry Potter video games like Hogwarts Legacy, which also include the movies’ visual designs.
The Fantastic Beasts movies attempted to continue the Harry Potter movie franchise by telling a prequel story set in the same world, supporting just how big the original films became. However. Fantastic Beasts did not take off in the way Warner Bros. intended, leading to a period of uncertainty for the franchise. Even in these uncertain times, though, the original movies remained popular.
Nonetheless, 2026 is officially bringing that era of Harry Potter to a close. December of that year will see HBO Max’s Harry Potter TV show release its first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. With new actors, new sets, new designs, and a retelling of the story set to be even more faithful to the books than the movie franchise was, HBO’s Harry Potter show will attempt to become the face of the franchise.
Expected to run for seven seasons, one for each of the original books, the show will be a decade-long journey in the same way the movie franchise was. For the next 10 years, HBO’s Harry Potter will be the face of the franchise, effectively bringing the era of the movie franchise to an end.
HBO’s Recent Marketing Proves A New Era Of Harry Potter Is Here
Since the start of 2026, HBO has been pushing the marketing for its Harry Potter TV show. In May 2026, a trailer titled “Coming Soon” was released, teasing the projects to come on the small screen, from DC’s Lanterns to House of the Dragon season 3. These projects, among others, were shown in brief clips in a montage style, with Harry Potter having a notable, distinct difference. At the end of the trailer, Harry Potter was the stinger.
Rather than being shown in the earlier montage, the trailer specifies that this Christmas, Harry Potter is coming to HBO Max. The footage that follows is slightly longer than the clips shown for the earlier shows, proving just how much importance HBO is placing on the upcoming show.
The footage used also highlights the differences between the show and the movies. The Quidditch moments especially look different, having a distinct style compared to that of the movies. With Quidditch not playing as big a part in the movie series as it did in the books, it makes sense for the Harry Potter series, which is set to include more book elements, to push it to the fore.
All of this just goes to show how HBO envisions Harry Potter as the start of a new era. As we move closer to its December 2026 release date, the trailers and news we get for Harry Potter will likely only support that, officially bringing the movie era to a close and pivoting towards the beginning of what is likely to be the enduring legacy of the TV show.
