It's Official, House Of The Dragon Season 3 Will Be Nothing Like Season 2

HBO’s House of the Dragon will feel like a whole new show in season 3. This Game of Thrones spinoff series spent its first two seasons setting the stage for the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. This is an event we heard a lot about in the original fantasy show, and House of the Dragon has offered a chance to see this moment of downfall for the Targaryens and their dragons firsthand. Naturally, the lead-up to the war itself revolved around a lot of political discord, all of which was imperative for House of the Dragon to cover.

Now that we know how the Targaryens got to the point of civil war, House of the Dragon season 3 will dive into the bloody meat of the Dance of the Dragons—nothing held back. It’s confirmed that the season will kick right off with the Battle of the Gullet, a devastating conflict of the sea and air. House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal describes the premiere and its battle as “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made” (via EW) indicating that the battle will go far beyond anything we saw in seasons 1 and 2, or even Game of Thrones.

This is certainly an exciting prospect, especially when considering Rhaenyra Targaryen. Though she’s the central character, this House of the Dragon queen has been relatively reserved across the board. Rhaenyra’s actions have been limited as she attempts to avoid war, keep her children alive, and reel in her own supporters. However, actor Emma D’Arcy has teased that House of the Dragon season 3 will finally see Rhaenyra take on a more “active, front facing” position. It’s another sign that this is what the Game of Thrones spinoff has been building toward.

House Of The Dragon’s Final Two Seasons Will Make Or Break The Show

HBO has confirmed that House of the Dragon season 4 will be the show’s final installment. This makes the arrival of the Battle of Gullet at the start of season 3 that much more important. House of the Dragon is officially at the halfway point, with seasons 1 and 2 largely serving as exposition and general setup. The shift into full-on war and legendary conflict in season 3 is how this Game of Thrones spinoff will officially define itself, while season 4’s ending will provide viewers with a final answeron the series.

As popular as Game of Thrones was during its run, those final two seasons turned the tide in viewers’ overall outlook on the show. Season 8, especially, was extremely divisive, so all eyes are on House of the Dragon now to prove whether it can stick the landing. Interestingly, Rhaenyra’s story is destined to go similarly to Daenerys’. Her desperation to take the throne will twist her with cruelty and paranoia. It will certainly mean more excitement than previous seasons, but House of the Dragon will have to avoid this feeling like a repeat of Game of Thrones.

What House Of The Dragon Season 3’s Change Could Mean For The Game Of Thrones Franchise

House of the Dragon‘s final two seasons have power that extends beyond determining the show’s overall quality. If the conclusion of this spinoff series again falls flat, it would officially establish a trend for the franchise. If these seasons perform spectacularly, however, it would be proof that the controversial season 8 won’t forever define Game of Thrones.

Since the Game of Thrones franchise continues to expand with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the confirmed Aegon’s Conquest movie, and several other projects, House of the Dragon must use this shift to lend confidence in the future. It’s a lot of responsibility placed on only two seasons of TV. However, as this franchise has already proven, two seasons is all it takes to toss a show downhill. Certainly, it will be enough to save one too.
