IPL 2026: Here’s why Navdeep Saini is not playing against Chennai Super Kings in today’s match

The high-octane atmosphere at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium is electric tonight, as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) play host to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 22nd match of the IPL 2026 season. While KKR is desperately hunting for their first win of the campaign, CSK enter the fray buoyed by a recent clinical victory against Delhi Capitals. However, the biggest talking point before the first ball was delivered wasn’t just the tactical battle between Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane, but a significant change in the KKR bowling arsenal: the absence of speedster Navdeep Saini.

Why Navdeep Saini is missing from the KKR XI today?

The omission of Saini from the starting eleven comes as a tactical recalibration rather than a long-term injury setback. Speaking at the toss, KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane confirmed that the decision was dictated by the return of a key specialist.

Varun Chakaravarthy is fit. He’s come in in place of Navdeep Saini,” Rahane noted at the toss, emphasizing that while the team’s spirit remained high after a narrow loss in the previous game, finding the right balance post-mega auction has been a challenging puzzle.

Saini, who was brought in as a replacement for the injured Harshit Rana earlier this season, had been putting in the hard yards to find his rhythm. However, with the Chennai surface traditionally offering a hint of grip for the slower bowlers, the team management opted for the mystery spin of Chakaravarthy to partner Sunil Narine. Despite being left out of the primary XI, Saini remains a vital part of the tactical deck, featuring prominently on the Impact Substitute list. His exclusion today is a classic case of a horses for courses strategy, as KKR looks to squeeze the CSK batters in the middle overs with dual spin.
