Insigne and Bernardeschi leave Toronto after three years in MLS

Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi have both left Toronto FC by mutual consent after three years in MLS.

Insigne made the move to Canada after leaving boyhood club Napoli. Bernardeschi, meanwhile, arrived after five years with Juventus, with both players making their debuts for the club on July 23, 2022 in a 4-0 home win over Charlotte FC.

Since the Italian duo arrived, Bernardeschi leads all Toronto players for both goals (26) and assists (15) in all competitions, with Insigne second by both metrics (19 goals, 14 assists).

Bernardeschi made 99 appearances for the Reds in total, with Insigne making 76.

Neither player has appeared in Toronto’s last two games – a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls and a 3-0 triumph over the Portland Timbers.

Toronto’s general manager, Jason Hernandez, told their website: “The club would like to thank Lorenzo for his efforts over the last three years.

“After several meaningful discussions, we are happy to have found a solution that is agreeable to all parties involved. We wish Lorenzo all the best moving forward.”

On Bernardeschi, he added: “After internal discussions with Federico, we were aligned that this was the correct moment to part ways.

“We would like to thank Fede for his contributions to Toronto FC over the past three years and wish him the best in the next chapter of his career.”

Insigne and Bernardeschi failed to bring success to Toronto, who finished 13th in the Eastern Conference in 2022, 15th in 2023 and 11th in 2024.

They are currently third-bottom of the division with 17 points from 19 games, only above Atlanta United and CF Montreal.
