The second ODI of the three-match series between India and West Indies at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati produced one of the most extraordinary run-fests in the cricketing history. West Indies posted 405/7, their first 400-plus total in men’s ODI cricket, only for India to chase down the target with remarkable ease.
Led by an unbeaten 223 from Shubman Gill, India reached 406/2 and sealed the series with an eight-wicket victory. The match produced a remarkable collection of individual and team records.
Here’s the complete list of records broken during IND vs WI 2nd ODI
1. Shubman Gill hits the fastest ODI double century
The biggest record of the night belonged to Shubman Gill.
The India captain reached his double century in just 117 balls, breaking Ishan Kishan’s previous record of 126 balls for the fastest ODI double hundred.
Gill eventually finished unbeaten on 223 from 133 deliveries, with 26 fours and eight sixes. He became only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score multiple double centuries in men’s ODIs.
2. Gill scores the highest individual score in an ODI chase
Gill’s 223* also created another major record.
His innings became the highest individual score in an ODI run chase, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup.
3. Gill smashes the highest individual score by an Indian captain
223 not out was also Gill’s highest ODI score and the highest individual total by an Indian captain, surpassing Virender Sehwag’s 219 against West Indies in 2011.
4. India complete their highest-ever ODI chase
India’s 406/2 became their highest successful run chase in men’s ODI cricket.
The chase was also the second-highest successful chase in ODI history, behind South Africa’s famous 438-run pursuit against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
India’s achievement was even more impressive because West Indies had scored 405/7 after batting first.
5. West Indies score their first 400-plus ODI total
West Indies had plenty of records of their own.
Their 405/7 was their first-ever 400-plus score in men’s ODI cricket. The innings was built around three centuries, with John Campbell scoring 101, Shai Hope making 104 and Amir Jangoo hitting 114.
The three hundreds also made West Indies only the sixth team to have three centurions in a single ODI innings.
6. Five centuries in one ODI
Perhaps the most unusual record from the Guwahati thriller was the number of centuries.
For the first time in men’s ODI history, five different batters scored centuries in the same match.
West Indies supplied three – John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo – while India had Rohit and Gill.
7. Rohit Sharma completes 200 sixes on Indian soil
Rohit added another milestone to the record-filled contest.
The India opener scored 101 from 75 balls, laced with 6 sixes ans 10 fours. He has now become the first batter to club 200 sixes in a country.
8. India reach 300 at a record pace
India’s extraordinary scoring rate produced another landmark.
The hosts reached 300 in only 29.1 overs, making it the fastest any team had reached the 300-run mark in an ODI.
9. Gill reaches 150 in record time for India
Gill’s acceleration was also reflected in his journey to 150.
He reached the milestone in just 89 balls, the fastest 150 by an Indian batter in men’s ODI cricket. His innings continued to gather momentum before he raced through his second hundred.
10. India sets the record of most 400+ totals in ODIs
With the run chase of 406, India have now left South Africa behind and become the only team to cross 400+ totals in ODIs nine times.
