Virat Kohli produced another memorable performance in the first ODI of the three-match series against West Indies, but the India star was in no mood to dwell on personal milestones after rewriting two major records previously held by Sachin Tendulkar.
Playing at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, Kohli smashed an unbeaten 139 off just 88 balls to power India to an eight-wicket victory. His explosive innings featured 10 fours and nine sixes and helped India chase down West Indies’ 295/7 with 50 balls to spare.
The knock was significant for another reason. Kohli crossed the 15,000-run mark in ODI cricket, becoming only the second batter after Tendulkar to reach the landmark. He also moved past Tendulkar’s tally for the most ODI runs scored in home conditions.

Kohli began the match with 14,941 ODI runs and needed 59 more to enter the 15,000-run club.
He got there in style.
By reaching the milestone, Kohli became the fastest batter to score 15,000 ODI runs, surpassing Tendulkar’s previous benchmark. The former India captain achieved the feat in his 303rd ODI innings, significantly quicker than Tendulkar’s 377 innings.
The second major record arrived later in the innings. Kohli needed 110 runs to surpass Tendulkar’s 6,976 ODI runs in home conditions. His unbeaten 139 took him comfortably beyond that mark.
It was another reminder of how closely Kohli’s ODI career has followed Tendulkar’s statistical path, even though the two played in different eras.
Kohli plays down personal milestones
Despite the magnitude of the achievement, Kohli insisted that records were not driving his approach.
Speaking after the match, he explained that his attention remained on understanding the situation and contributing to the team’s requirements rather than chasing individual landmarks.
“For me, Sachin paaji is always going to be Sachin paaji. MS Dhoni is always going to be MS Dhoni in terms of being my first captain. These things cannot change inside me. I have never looked at myself as a guy who has established and achieved. You never really get to a position where you say that’s it. I’ve done it,” Kohli said.
“You can be content, but if you put your head down and you are humble enough to perform and prepare and just do the right things in sport, from an ego perspective, you can never get to a position saying, ‘I’m better than everyone else’. Because that’s the end. He revolutionised the game in his time. And that, for me, is way beyond numbers and comparisons. The impact he left on people will never be forgotten,” Kohli said, adding that the achievements tend to arrive while he is concentrating on doing his job for India.
That attitude was reflected in his innings. Rather than slowing down after reaching the major milestones, Kohli continued to attack and finished with one of his most aggressive ODI hundreds.
A record 55th ODI century for Kohli
Kohli’s innings was also his 55th ODI century, extending his record for the most hundreds in men’s ODI cricket.
His hundred came from only 74 balls before he accelerated further during the closing stages. By the time India completed the chase, Kohli had transformed a routine target into another memorable individual performance.
The innings also underlined the change in his batting approach. Kohli admitted that finding ways to increase his aggression while retaining control has been an important challenge at this stage of his career.
“I got a challenge at this stage of my career to kind of up the ante and play a gear or two higher,” he said.

Shubman Gill provides perfect support to Kohli
Kohli was not the only Indian batter to enjoy a memorable evening.
Captain Shubman Gill scored 110, laying the foundation for India’s chase after West Indies posted 295/7. Once Gill departed, Kohli continued the assault and ensured India finished the chase without any late pressure.
For West Indies, Justin Greaves’ 101 had provided the platform for a competitive total, while John Campbell and Amir Jangoo also contributed important runs. India’s response, however, was simply too powerful.
Kohli’s focus turns towards the 2027 World Cup
The 37-year-old’s attention is now firmly centred on ODI cricket and India’s preparations for the 2027 World Cup.
Kohli explained that having clarity about his remaining international role has helped him approach matches differently. Instead of feeling pressure whenever he walks out to bat, he wants to enjoy his opportunities and continue challenging himself physically and technically.
His latest performance suggests there is still plenty of ambition left.
The comparisons with Tendulkar will inevitably continue whenever Kohli breaks another record. But after surpassing two of the batting legend’s ODI benchmarks in a single innings, Kohli’s own message was clear: the numbers are a consequence of the journey, not the reason for it.
