Roberto Mancini has set out to win a major trophy once again with Italy as he starts a second stint in charge of the national team.
Former Manchester City boss Mancini, 61, won the delayed Euro 2020 title against England at Wembley.
But he left in 2023 after failing to reach the 2022 World Cup and shockingly inherits an Italian side who have now missed three World Cups in a row.
“I’m here to bring Italy back to where it deserves to be,” he said at his unveiling.
“Regardless of what happened in 2023, the goal is always to win and play well. I’m convinced the players are there and that they’re good, especially the young ones.
“I’d like to win a major trophy, maybe even two. I’d like to build a project with the national team.”
Italy have won four World Cups but have failed to make it past the group stage since their most recent title in 2006.
Mancini will first have to qualify for the Euros back in England in 2024 before hoping to end that long wait for a return on the global stage.
He said: “If Italy qualified for the World Cup, as would be normal, they would still be a team aspiring to reach the final, even if they weren’t among the favourites.
“We want to become a team to beat: now we’ll prepare for the European Championship and then we’ll think about the World Cup.”
Mancini’s first game in charge will be a Nations League match against Belgium in September.
