Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Institute season 1, episode 8!The Institute showrunner Benjamin Cavell explains how season 2 of the supernatural horror series will build on the ending of Stephen King’s book. The Institute season 1 ended in a very similar way to King’s 2019 novel, with Luke and his friends escaping from the title location, destroying it in the process. But some threads remain unresolved for season 2.
Speaking with Collider, Cavell explained how The Institute season 1’s ending intentionally leaves some elements vague, laying the groundwork for season 2’s story. As for what the new episodes will cover, the showrunner promises to build off the foundation of King’s ending to expand upon the wider mystery. Check out what Cavell said below:
We’ve thought a lot about it, and I’ve talked to Stephen about it. The book ends with the suggestion that there is much more going on and that there’s a much bigger world and conspiracy, even than what we’ve seen. That’s how we wanted to end Season 1 of the show too. If there is a demand for it and people are watching, we definitely plan to make more and we have some very cool ideas about where exactly it goes and how we keep unspooling that mystery of who’s behind this, what do they think they’re doing, and where does it all go?
What Cavell’s Statement Means For The Institute Season 2
The Institute season 2 was confirmed by MGM+ in August 2025, prior to the season 1 finale. As for that final episode, it followed the same structure as the end of King’s book, albeit with some changes that prop open doors for future storytelling. This includes not revealing the identity of the Man on the Phone, while sidestepping moral conversations.
This leaves season 2 open to explore questions of morality when it comes to using children as telepathic and telekinetic weapons, alongside the bigger conspiracy at play. Despite losing some people along the way, multiple core cast members from The Institute season 1 are bound to return as the wider world of the series gets expanded upon.
Based on Cavell’s statement, season 2 is going to broaden the story, leaping off the threads that both the show and King’s novel left dangling by the end of the core plot. While it’s unclear how this will come out in the forthcoming episodes, it will likely involve a plethora of new story beats in line with season 1.
Our Take On How The Institute Season 2 Will Build On Stephen King’s Book
There are a number of paths The Institute season 2 can take, from surviving kids going back home to their families and telling them what’s happening, to the group going rogue and trying to destroy as many of the facilities as possible. The show and book established this as a countrywide operation, meaning their work has only just begun.
With new episodes already confirmed and clearly poised to expand upon what the show has established already, The Institute could become another long-running success for MGM+, similar to From. However, the original story that transpires from here still needs to consider what made the book storyline so engaging in order to succeed. Either way, Luke’s journey has just begun.
