How Taylor Sheridan’s New 9-Part Yellowstone Spinoff Breaks A Classic TV Tradition Detailed By Dutton Ranch Star

Dutton Ranch is breaking new ground.

Taylor Sheridan’s newest Yellowstone spin-off has the tall task of helping replace the franchise-launching original Paramount+ series, which ended its run in 2024 after five seasons of drama both on-screen and off. Reinventing the wheel is just not in the cards for a show expected to carry on such a huge legacy, but Dutton Ranch still has room to subvert expectations even as it’s serving up a lot that is familiar, as one cast member was delighted to discover.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, Oreana actor Natalie Lind discussed a TV trope that was upended with a tricky Dutton Ranch scene in which Kelly Reilly’s Beth walks in on her son Carter (Finn Little) and Oreana while they’re in a compromising position. “I was so taken back when I read that scene because, for me personally, I would’ve freaked out,” Lind said. But instead of having a typical soap opera meltdown, Oreana proves her mettle by holding her own with the ever-formidable Beth.

It shows how much dominance and how much air in a room Oreana takes up and she likes to be the center of attention but also stands her ground,” Lind explained. “And for that scene specifically, Kelly Reilly, she pulled me aside when we were working through Oreana and Beth’s relationship. Looking at all the Instagram comments and what people are saying, I think they expect our characters to butt heads. It was very important to Kelly that these two characters to have a mutual respect for each other.”

Reilly’s Beth may indeed feel like she’s looking into a mirror with Oreana. “I do think that Beth sees a younger version of her and Rip in Carter and Oreana,” Lind said. “And I think in a very bizarre way, not that walking in and seeing your son in bed is in any way kind of a sweet thing, but I think that it draws these ties back to this young love feeling that she had with Rip and she sees herself in Oreana.”

Lind was delighted to discover that Oreana and Beth’s Dutton Ranch relationship was taking this hard left-turn away from the expected. “I just absolutely love that we didn’t do the typical kind of mom’s boyfriend hating the daughter,” she said. “There’s this really cool dynamic between the two that throughout the season we even start expanding on a little bit more and it starts opening up Oreana’s background and her relationship with her family.”

Lind actually enjoyed filming the trope-busting bust-in scene, despite its uncomfortable aspects. “I absolutely loved doing that scene. Anytime that you’re doing any sort of nudity scene, there’s always that awkwardness of walking around in pasties and tape, but doing it with Finn and having Kelly in that scene with us, it was a lot of fun.”

The next episode of Dutton Ranch premieres on Paramount+ on May 29.
