House Of The Dragon Will Have A Better Ending Than Game Of Thrones

House of the Dragon season 3 is soaring toward its conclusion, which means we’ll only have one more season of Targaryen on Targaryen warfare, but it’s already becoming clear that the ending of HOTD is not going to be another Game of Thrones-style disappointment.

It may be a prequel set in the same universe, with similar production, art, writing, and themes, but House of the Dragon has managed to carve out a unique space for itself in the larger A Song of Ice and Fire world. Building upon a multi-generational storyline, House of the Dragon traded an explosive start to the series for a slow character study.

While that may have frustrated fans at some points in the first two seasons, it’s created a solid bedrock to launch the story in the third and fourth seasons, where armies have clustered, and the stakes have been raised to dizzying levels. This slow, precise storytelling has ensured the final season of HOTD will be very strong.

It’s a worry that anyone who has been watching George R.R. Martin adaptations since 2011 will have had going into House of the Dragon. The final season of Game of Thrones took the wind out of a collective fandom’s sails, but it seems that House of the Dragon is heading for something grander and much more satisfying.

Game Of Thrones Began To Falter Long Before Its Final Season, But House Of The Dragon Is Only Getting Stronger

The final season of Game of Thrones did not come out of nowhere. The cracks in the series began to show long before the battle of Winterfell was filmed to be nearly unwatchable. The first four seasons of GOT were pretty unassailable, but it was in season 5 that the head-scratching decisions began.

Season 6 was a marked improvement, though it seemed like it was mostly saved by big episodes and momentous, plot-heavy sequences that lurched the show forward. Season 7 was a disappointment from the time it was announced that the season would be three episodes shorter than usual.

The problems with the final season of Game of Thrones weren’t due to flash decisions or brash mistakes; they were the result of structural problems that began showing long before 2019. House of the Dragon doesn’t have these structural problems, and in fact has made a concentrated effort to ward the story from creeping issues.

We know each of the characters in House of the Dragon. We know what they are capable of, and we know how they’ve changed over time. It’s a familiarity that allows us to begin to root for Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) and worry for Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), and makes their personality shifts feel more understandable and in line with what we see happening in the story.

House Of The Dragon Has All The Source Material It Needs For A Strong Finish

Many of the issues with Game of Thrones‘ final seasons were also a result of the showrunners lacking the source material to finish what was becoming a massive story. By the time season 5 started, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff were running out of published A Song of Ice and Fire novels. By season 6, they were working almost entirely off outlines supplied by Martin.

The source for House of the Dragon, on the other hand, is complete. Fire & Blood may be only the first part of a planned two-part series, but everything that’s expected to take place in House of the Dragon can be found in the first part of Fire & Blood. It ensures that there will be no groping in the dark once season 4 comes around.
