House Of The Dragon Star’s Franchise Launching Sci-Fi Movie Gets Second Chance On Streaming

Sci-fi and fantasy stories continue to perform in the world of streaming, especially on HBO Max, with Warner Bros. Discovery having numerous properties that tackle the beloved genres. From Game of Thrones, Lanterns, House of the Dragon, Watchmen, to Dune: Prophecy, and The Last of Us, audiences are still drawn to fantastical stories, following numerous characters on complex arcs.

One of the superhero installments that hit theaters this summer in 2026 was Supergirl, bringing House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock back to the big screen as Kara Zor-El, after her cameo in 2025’s Superman, starring David Corenswet as the last son of Krypton. For her solo adventure, which was directed by Craig Gillespie, the DC Universe entry loosely adapted Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Woman of Tomorrow comic, exploring the Kryptonian heroine.

Are you the Man of Steel — or still stuck in a phone booth?

Even though it didn’t perform at the box office, the Supergirl movie has officially landed on HBO Max, and it has already become a streaming sensation worldwide, as it is holding the #1 spot on the Warner Bros. Discovery’s owned platform in several countries. The film arrived on the streamer on Thursday, September 10, more than two months after it was released in theaters. Despite the fact that it only grossed $126.4 million for its run, there are a number of reasons why it has already surged on the HBO service.

Many people who didn’t see it in theaters may now be interested in seeing it for themselves after the mixed response, as Supergirl is holding a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 373 reviews, while its audience score is at 72%, showing that critics and general moviegoers were maybe not necessarily in full agreement. There are also likely many who want to keep themselves up to date with the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” and therefore exploring Alcock’s sci-fi installment.

Will Supergirl Return To The DCU?

Milly Alcock as Supergirl turning around in Supergirl

While Kara may not be getting her own film anytime soon after the Supergirl ending, Alcock is not leaving the DCU franchise anytime soon. The actress is set to return in 2027 as part of Man of Tomorrow, sharing the screen once more with Corenswet’s Man of Steel, as principal photography recently wrapped, with the upcoming sequel slated to introduce Brainiac into Gunn’s superhero franchise. The Superman sequel will see the titular hero and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor having to team up against the iconic DC foe, while also featuring other heroes like Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, and Blue Beetle.

However, the Man of Tomorrow movie isn’t the only planned appearance for Supergirl, as she will also be in a mystery DC Studios project, according to executive producer Lars P. Winther. He told The Hollywood Reporter in June that “Man of Tomorrow, which is what we’re shooting now, [Alcock] is in that movie. Without giving too much away, this movie ends a particular way, and you see where she’s going to end up. She’s done her wild ways, and now she’s going to try to get back in with her cousin and be more on Earth again. That’s where she is in Man of Tomorrow. It’s all more Earth-based. So we have Man of Tomorrow, and we already know what the next movie’s going to be after that, and she’s a big part of that.”

Supergirl is now streaming on HBO Max.
