Hit Final Fantasy Officially Becomes Unplayable Forever On October 6

The future of the Final Fantasy franchise looks bright as we get closer to the 2027 release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, but one game in the series is officially being shut down on October 6 and will be completely unplayable. You might want to say goodbye while you still can. In the past, mobile or live-service games like Final Fantasy Record Keeper, Final Fantasy All The Bravest, and Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia have all been quietly taken out back by Square Enix and sent to live on the proverbial farm.

Now, Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis is being put out to pasture. The game was officially delisted back in July this year, but those who previously picked up the game could still play it. However, the mobile spinoff will come to a complete end on October 6, making it unplayable for everyone, everywhere. Aren’t live-service games great?

Sephiroth grins in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.

For those that might not be aware, Ever Crisis is (or was) a free-to-play mobile game released in 2023 and has worked through the entire story of Final Fantasy 7 via updates and in-game events. The game offers a retelling of the events of the original 1998 game, as well as spinoffs like Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus.

“Relive the most memorable moments from FFVII and experience the journey of a young hero Sephiroth in FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS,” reads the game’s Steam Store description. “Experience both classic and new stories within the FFVII universe presented in a retro-style look combined with modern, beautifully rendered graphics. Team up your favorite characters and customize each one with iconic gear and weapons to defeat powerful opponents in Solo or Co-op battle mode.”

“Thank you for playing FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS,” adds an official communication from Square Enix. “As announced on the official website and via the in-game notice on July 7, 2026, at 7:00 PM PDT, we regret to inform you that FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS will end its service on October 6, 2026, at 11:00 PM PDT. For more information regarding the service termination, please refer to the official website or the in-game notices.” Heartfelt stuff, I’m sure we can all agree.

This is far from the first game Square Enix has shut down and made completely unplayable. Over the last few years we’ve seen titles like NieR Reincarnation, Marvel’s Avengers, and Final Fantasy: All The Bravest taken offline. Most recently, Square Enix took the mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV offline. Truly, there’s no small amount of lost media in the world of video games, and Square Enix is responsible for a pretty good chunk of it.

Fortunately, the mainline Final Fantasy games all remain hale and hearty and perfectly playable on a variety of modern platforms, so we’re not missing out on too much.
