England are preparing for a fresh chapter in Test cricket after a period of major changes in their leadership and coaching setup. With the Pakistan series approaching, attention has now turned towards how the new-look side will take shape under its experienced captain. Among those expected to play a key role is Harry Brook, who has already taken on significant leadership responsibility in England’s white-ball setup. The batter recently spoke about the latest developments surrounding the Test side and his own future.

Harry Brook backs Joe Root for England Test captaincy

Brook was England’s vice-captain when Ben Stokes stepped away from Test cricket, which naturally led to speculation about whether he could take over the red-ball captaincy. However, the England batter believes the decision to hand the role to Joe Root was the right one. Speaking to BBC Sport, Brook expressed his excitement about working with Root and backed the former captain to lead England once again.

Root previously led England in Tests between 2017 and 2022 and is now set to take charge again as the team begins life after Stokes. Brook has meanwhile continued to develop as a leader in the white-ball setup. His time as captain has also brought additional responsibilities away from the field, something he admitted has changed his perspective on leadership.

“I honestly don’t know. I don’t really look at it like that. The decision to make Rooty captain is the right one. I’m actually really excited to see what he can do. He’s definitely the right man to take over that job. I’m really looking forward to working alongside him,” Brook said.

Brook keeps door open for Test captaincy

Although Brook is fully supportive of Root, he knows the possibility of becoming England’s Test captain could arise in the future. Brook will also be looking to improve his own performances after a difficult Ashes campaign in Australia, where he scored 358 runs in 10 innings.

“There are little things you learn throughout your career. Obviously, the past few months have been on quite a large scale. There is the potential I could be captain, but at this moment in time all I’m focusing on is trying to win a few games of cricket. I will be 1,000% behind Rooty, and I’m really looking forward to what this Test side can do,” he concluded.

The batter admitted that he has been working on assessing conditions more quickly and making better decisions about which shots to play. With England set to face Pakistan in a three-match Test series from August 19, Brook will now look to contribute under Root as the team begins its new red-ball era.
