Half-Life 3 Fans Losing It Over Official Announcement

The saga of Half-Life 3 really is a gaming story like no other, with millions of players standing by to play the third part in a trilogy that may well never become a reality. The first two games are obviously all time classics, and so it’s little wonder that fans are so desperate for it to return, but Valve have been frustratingly stoic about giving them absolutely nothing to get excited about.

There was some excitement before the announcement of the Steam Machine, before we all knew what it was, but that turned out to be quite a long way from confirmation of a new Half-Life game. That said, hope remains kindled for many, and a clue found in another recent announcement has been enough to get the community talking again.

Over on Twitter/X, one user shared a post highlighting phone case company dbrand’s latest advertisement for the Steam Machine, which features a logo for Half-Life 3. As the OP notes, it’s likely a joke, saying, “dbrand are infamous for pranks like those, but this is a commercial is for an officially licensed Companion Cube accessory, approved by Valve, so this be a real tease? Recently, rumors claimed Half-Life 3 is nearly finished and is meant to launch with Steam Machine, though nothing official about Half-Life 3 yet.”

The latter half of that statement is a lot more up in the air than it may first appear, but seeing the logo out in the wild was always going to generate some interest from the player base.

Releasing the game after so long, as an accompaniment to the Steam Machine, would certainly be an interesting play from Valve, and there’s every reason it could work. The confirmed price of the new hardware quickly brought reality home for many who were excited to get it, so having a distraction from that news could be a very good thing from a PR perspective.

Over on Reddit, fans reacted to the news in a predictably manic manner, with one saying, “I just hate how like this legit actually feels real and looks real and it’s a real company. This joke is pretty f***ed but i am starting to half believe.”

While another added, “I WANT TO BELIEVE.”

That said, every Half-Life 3 rumor we have ever had has turned out to be nothing, so it would make sense to take this latest revelation with an enormous pinch of salt as well.

Half-Life Gordon

At the very least, we’ll always have the older games to return to if we’re looking for a Half-Life fix. Plus, it’s actually quite fun to get excited for the third game a couple of times a year, when a vague clue or potential hint appears online.
