GTA 6 Romance Choices Will “Cut Much Deeper” Than In Previous Rockstar Games

Grand Theft Auto 6 is boldly going where no Grand Theft Auto game has gone before by depicting a romance between its two playable protagonists, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. There was always a high likelihood that their relationship and how they might interact with one another throughout Grand Theft Auto 6’s story would be affected by the choices players make, and we have now received official confirmation that these interactions are the meat and potatoes of the storytelling in GTA’s sixth mainline installment.

If you’ve been scouring social media in the last few days, you’re likely to have seen snippets of leaked Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay floating around. Thankfully, these leaks aren’t the only source players can look to for details about the new game, with Rockstar finally sharing some significant information regarding how gameplay as Jason and Lucia will take shape.

As per Dazed, Rockstar senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries explains that Grand Theft Auto 6 is “a Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative,” suggesting that it will interlock love with crime, and drama with tragedy. This alone is a massive departure, if so, since the only ‘love’ that players may be used to receiving in Grand Theft Auto games is when they’re indulging in lustful fantasies, typically at in-game strip clubs.

Therefore, to truly embrace romance in a Grand Theft Auto game is rather unprecedented. Plus, as Dazed reports, it’s possible that players’ “choices can have repercussions that cut much deeper than Rockstar’s previous titles or ‘honour’ systems that reward conscientious game playing.”

Rockstar North head of development and co-studio head Rob Nelson states that Lucia and Jason aren’t “empty avatars,” despite players being able to make plenty of choices, and that “their story becomes a journey you share with them.” That seems like a tough balancing act to have to perform for however long the golden path of the narrative is, not to mention if Lucia and Jason are affected by any decision-making that players must engage with in Grand Theft Auto 6’s open-world side missions.

Either way, Lucia and Jason are clearly the heart of Grand Theft Auto 6, and how much players’ actions actually influence the story, much less these characters’ dynamic and resolution by the time credits have rolled, will be fascinating to discover.

Otherwise, it should be fun nonetheless to see how the scripted story plays out, and it’s more than likely that players will take sides with either Lucia or Jason while the story unfolds and more is learned about them. For example, depending on how players respond to Lucia’s GTA 6 prologue, she could already have some fans in her corner or against her.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to be released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026.
