With the current season of House of the Dragon off to a controversial start and beloved characters suffering unexpected ends, there’s no doubt that longtime Game of Thrones fans will be tuning in for the remainder of Season 3 to see how events unfold—for better or worse. The show has already taken several dramatic liberties that diverge significantly from George R.R. Martin’s source material, prompting the author to publicly criticize some of the adaptation’s biggest changes and warn they could have major consequences for future seasons.
While there are a plethora of examples, Martin is certainly referring to the controversial decision to leave out certain characters, particularly Nettles, whose omission fundamentally reshapes Daemon Targaryen’s storyline and has been one of the adaptation’s most heavily criticized departures from Fire & Blood.
That said, while House of the Dragon has been criticized for removing beloved figures from Martin’s history, Game of Thrones: Dragonfire is taking the opposite approach by expanding the lore with original characters. And perhaps the most intriguing new addition is a new character with an extremely rare and powerful gift (via gotdragonfire.com).
Jayla Waters may not come directly from the pages of Fire & Blood, but her rare Dragon Dreams have already made her one of Game of Thrones’ most intriguing new characters. Loosely based on Martin’s Jeyne Waters, Jayla is a Dragonfire-specific character with a unique role in the game’s plot and who players must interact with in different ways depending on their allegiances.
According to the official Dragonfire description:
Jayla Waters was born a bastard on Driftmark, the illegitimate daughter of a nobleman. Though raised in the trappings of nobility, she remains an outsider. Sent to live with you as a ward, Jayla is forging her destiny through a mix of wit and prophetic Dragon Dreams.
Longtime fans of the A Song of Ice and Fire universe will already know that Dragon Dreams are an incredibly rare gift, with only a select few experiencing them across the franchise. For the uninitiated, Dragon Dreams are a rare form of prophecy unique to certain individuals with Valyrian blood, allowing them to foresee future events through vivid and often symbolic dreams.
Other characters who’ve experienced Dragon Dreams in the established lore include Daenys the Dreamer, whose prophecy saved House Targaryen from the Doom of Valyria; Helaena Targaryen, whose cryptic visions foreshadow several key events during the Dance of the Dragons in both Fire & Blood and in House of the Dragon; Aerion Targaryen; Daeron “the Drunken” Targaryen; Maester Aemon; and, of course, the Mother of Dragons and Breaker of Chains herself, Daenerys Targaryen.
To put the rarity of Dragon Dreams into perspective, based on source material, the Targaryen dynasty ruled Westeros for nearly 300 years, and George R.R. Martin’s expanded lore features well over 100 named members of the family across novels, novellas, and companion books. Despite that extensive lineage, only a small handful of roughly five or six individuals are definitively associated with Dragon Dreams, making the prophetic ability one of the rarest gifts in all of A Song of Ice and Fire.
That said, it’s a pretty big deal that a brand-new character, and a bastard nonetheless, has officially been unveiled for Dragonfire, even if the character isn’t part of Martin’s established canon. If you’re a fan of the franchise, Jayla Waters is just one of many compelling new characters waiting to be discovered in Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, available to download for free now on iOS and Android.
