Game of Thrones fans have been waiting for ages for a proper RPG adaptation that fully encompasses the world of Westeros faithfully. It’s surprising there hasn’t been a hugely popular or successful modern RPG on the scale of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt set in George R.R. Martin’s legendary fantasy universe, and even more surprising that there isn’t a project in the works to deliver just that, especially after the recent announcement of games like the open-world Lord of the Rings RPG from Warhorse Studios.

While the upcoming Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is sure to be hugely popular among fans, it’s an RTS game first and foremost and by nature will not appeal to the wider fanbase. Further, there’s been a trove of highly rated mobile games based on the IP, from the long-running Game of Thrones: Legends match-3 RPG to Warner Bros. Boston’s Game of Thrones: Conquest and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, all of which rank among the most-downloaded games on both the App Store and Google Play.

This Free Dark Fantasy RPG Captures Westeros Perfectly

While it may not be perfect and has faced its share of criticisms, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is an officially licensed and still relatively new RPG that is well worth checking out if you’re a fan of the franchise. The game has recently blown up in Eastern APAC markets and is even getting troves of new content, but due to its somewhat lackluster reception in Western markets, it currently isn’t receiving quite the same attention.

That’s a shame too, because, despite its somewhat mobile-style monetization model, Kingsroad had a very attractive premise and its gameplay wasn’t quite as bad as you might think based on reviews. If they’d done away with the aggressive pay-to-play live-service features, Kingsroad had the right ingredients for success: a well-constructed open-world that captured the grim atmosphere of Westeros, strong tie-ins to the original HBO series and characters, and a compelling original story set alongside the main events of the show.

The North Remembers Kingsroad For All The Wrong Reasons

While the negative reviews are entirely justified regarding Kingsroad‘s live-service shenanigans, if you can look past its shortcomings, it is still the best officially licensed Game of Thrones RPG on offer, and it’s technically free to try out and play now if you want to see for yourself. Further, the game is about to get a massive restructuring and overhaul that will see the APAC build go live globally, and based on feedback in the Eastern markets, this is a vastly improved build than what’s currently on offer in the US and Western markets.

For that reason alone, even if you don’t jump back in right away, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is worth keeping an eye on in the coming months, with the game’s Executive Producer recently confirming that this update will be in effect in Q3 2026, or before the end of September this year. As such, it might be worth diving in and getting caught up with the current build for a point of comparison when the new one rolls out.
