Game Of Thrones Is Officially Switching Genres When It Returns In 2027

The beloved HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones may have ended with a whimper back in 2019, but that hasn’t slowed the franchise down much. House of the Dragon Season 3 recently came to an end with the promise of more to come, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is also getting another run of adventures. There’s also the Aegon’s Conquest film on the way, and a stage play. It truly never ends.

Game of Thrones is also giving gamers more than a few reasons to be excited. There are multiple live service Game of Thrones games currently out there, including Kingsroad and Dragonfire. But anyone craving something with a little more meat on the bone should be paying attention to the upcoming Game of Thrones: War For Westeros, which represents a big genre-shift for Game of Thrones games.

Obviously, the one thing the majority of gamers want is a proper open-world Game of Thrones RPG in the vein of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Skyrim. And, with Warhorse Studios working on an official Lord of the Rings RPG, I believe we can definitely hold out hope for that somewhere down the road. However, War For Westeros scratches another very specific itch by marrying Game of Thrones with RTS (real-time strategy), which is quite clearly a perfect genre for a series about epic fantasy battles.

It’s worth noting that we did actually get a Game of Thrones RTS game 15 years ago. Released in 2011, the same year the HBO series premiered, Game of Thrones: Genesis was based on the books rather than the show. It also has a mostly negative rating on Steam and a score of 53 on Metacritic, which explains why it didn’t live very long in the memory.

War For Westeros, however, looks like an altogether much more polished affair, and is based on the HBO adaptation rather than the original books. That means characters like Jon Snow and the Night King return, looking exactly as they did in the series. You’ll also be able to relive iconic battles from the show, and even change the outcome of many of them. Insert a joke about fixing season 8 here if you want. At this point it’s low-hanging fruit, so I’m leaving it alone.

All in all, after years of free-to-play mobile games not quite scratching the itch for an authentic Game of Thrones experience, this shift in genres to something that actually makes sense for the series has me seriously excited for War For Westeros when it arrives in 2027.
