Shōgun season 2 has just made a significant step forward.

Shōgun released its first season on FX back in early 2024. The historical action epic is set in Japan, following the story of a mysterious European ship that arrives in a small fishing village in Japan. Based on the James Clavell novel of the same name, Shōgun is co-created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. The key cast members include Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Takehiro Hira, and Tadanobu Asano.

As per co-creator Marks’ X post, Shōgun season 2 has just reached a major milestone. The post shared a behind-the-scenes photo of Marks and Kondo to reveal that the sophomore season had just finished filming. Marks teased what is to come in a celebratory caption, saying: “The stages started empty, and now they’re empty again. That’s a wrap on Shōgun Season 2. Almost 200 days of tatami, palanquins, and fine lacquerware in the can. Wait until you see what’s coming…“.

TheShōgun season 2 news comes over two years after the series wrapped its ten-episode premiere season. After releasing two episodes during its first night in late February 2024, the action drama release weekly episodes up through Tuesday, April 23, 2024. At the time of writing, fans have already been waiting over two years to re-enter this world.

Heightening anticipation even more is the fact that Shōgun‘s first season was followed by such overwhelmingly positive reception. The series boasts a startling 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, a score downgraded only minimally from its staggering 100% debut. Among the praisers includes ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki, who gave the series 8 out of 10 stars in her review and called it a “must-watch.”

Shōgun also had a great run when it came to awards. The show won over a dozen Emmy awards, including wins for multiple lead performers, including Sanada and Sawai. The show also won Outstanding Drama Series. This set the bar high for the series follow-up, and supported its renewal for both seasons 2 and 3.

With Marks’ announcement, the second season is clearly moving farther along than it ever has before. This does not mean a premiere is right around the corner. The follow-up season started principal photography back in late January this year, meaning the production lasted the better part of 8 months. Post-production will be to follow, which suggests another several months at least before release readiness. Nonetheless, this is an exciting milestone for Shōgun season 2 that indicates a great step forward.
