From’s Terrifying New Monsters Officially Reveal The Township’s Darkest Secret Yet

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 4, episode 5, “What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been.”Terrifying new monsters have debuted in From season 4, and their arrival reveals the Township’s darkest secret yet. At the end of season 4, episode 4, “Of Myths and Monsters,” a resident named Roger (Eugene Sampang) finds a rope that leads to something bubbling to the surface of the settlement’s lake. Episode 5, “What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been,” reveals that the rope connects to three life-sized dolls.

Donna Raines (Elizabeth Saunders) worries that the dolls were in the lake to prevent something more nefarious from coming out of it, so she and the other From characters at the settlement pack the dolls with rocks so they can sink back down. However, at night, Donna and the others hear an eerie singing sound, which allows Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) to remember the truth.

The dolls come to life and burst into the settlement cabin, completely unaffected by the talisman as From‘s nocturnal monsters are. One of them proceeds to gruesomely kill Roger by ripping his jaw open, and it is only after Tabitha kills another one of the monsters with one of the nearby totems that the other two retreat.

From‘s new monsters are horrifying on their own, especially given their immunity to the talismans, but what Tabitha remembers about their origins and the connection to the residents’ nightmares is even more disturbing.

The Nightmares Of The Deceased Come To Life In From’s Township

Tabitha remembers that in one of her past lives as a child in the Township, she played with toy dolls, and there was a man who was afraid and had nightmares of them. Because of this, he threw the dolls into the lake, but after he died, the dolls came to life. This leads to the memory Tabitha had last season at the settlement of herself as a child looking up and screaming at something towering over her. In the present, the same doll monsters attack Tabitha, Donna, Ethan Matthews (Simon Webster), Roger, and Patty (Trina Corkum).

Based on the monsters’ origins as explained by Tabitha, they were created because the man who was afraid of them died, and his death brought his nightmares to life. This largely aligns with something Sara Myers (Avery Konrad) said in From season 2 about how her brother, Nathan (Paul Zinno), had nightmares of cicadas as a child, and after his death, other residents gradually started to see swarms of cicadas.

The Township tormenting the residents after death is also touched on in season 4, episode 4 by Marielle Sinclair (Kaelen Ohm), who explains to Kristi Miller (Chloe Van Landschoot) that she hears the screams of every individual who has ever died there. She says that even after death, all these people are still trapped here and that something ancient and evil is feeding off their suffering.

Not only are the dead trapped in the Town, but their nightmares live on and terrorize the residents who haven’t died yet. As dark as some of From‘s other reveals have been, this is the darkest one yet, as death is just another form of being trapped and unleashes new nightmares upon the living.

Tabitha, Jade Herrera (David Alpay), Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau), and other characters have been working hard to figure out how to escape the Township, but given the larger reveal surrounding the new monsters, escape may not be possible in a traditional sense. Given that the dead are trapped and that their nightmares come to life, there may be no way to physically escape the Town, and even if the living do, the dead would seemingly be left behind for eternity.

Town elder — or just another lost soul?

It’s been emphasized for a while now that Tabitha has to save the Town’s dead children, but it’s been unclear what this means exactly. Now, it seems more likely than ever that before any of the living can leave, the children must be saved first, and perhaps the same is true for the rest of the dead as well.

With season 5 announced as the end of the series, From is headed into its endgame, which involves the characters still alive, freeing the dead, and facing their nightmares.
