Former opener picks ‘best candidate’ to replace Stephen Fleming as CSK’s next coach

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially entered a new era after bringing an end to their iconic partnership with long-serving head coach Stephen Fleming. As speculation over the franchise’s next coach continues to grow, former India opener Sadagoppan Ramesh has thrown his weight behind Indian legend, terming him the ideal candidate to lead the five-time IPL champions back to the top.

The coaching vacancy has attracted plenty of attention across Indian cricket, with several experienced names reportedly under consideration. However, Ramesh believes the Indian icon’s personality, coaching credentials, and leadership style make him the standout choice to succeed Fleming.

CSK move on after historic Stephen Fleming era

CSK are searching for a new head coach after mutually ending their remarkable 18-year association with Fleming. The decision was officially confirmed on July 13, 2026, following an extensive review of the franchise’s recent performances. Fleming’s departure marks the conclusion of one of the most successful coach-franchise partnerships in IPL history. Alongside guiding Chennai to multiple IPL titles, the former New Zealand captain also stepped away from his coaching roles with sister franchises Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket.

The responsibility of identifying Fleming’s successor now rests with CSK’s leadership group, with franchise icon MS Dhoni expected to play a significant role in the selection process. While the appointment is likely to take a few months, several high-profile names have already emerged as contenders for one of the most coveted coaching positions in franchise cricket.

Former opener picks the next coach of CSK

Amid the growing speculation, Ramesh has publicly endorsed VVS Laxman for the role. Speaking in an Instagram video, Ramesh explained why he believes the former India batter possesses all the qualities required to continue CSK’s celebrated culture.

“Many names are being mentioned as Fleming’s replacement. While options are aplenty, VVS Laxman is the best candidate to take over as CSK’s head coach. Among the three main reasons why he will work as CSK coach, the first is that he is a fantastic person,” Ramesh said.

He further highlighted Laxman’s ability to build relationships with players, something that has always been central to CSK’s success.

“He will be like a big brother to everyone in the team and take them to the next level. The CSK management has always looked at the team like a family. Such a wonderful culture will only get enhanced if Laxman becomes the head coach,” added Ramesh.

Ramesh also pointed to Laxman’s coaching background, noting his experience with India’s national team whenever Rahul Dravid or Gautam Gambhir were unavailable.

“He also has coaching experience at the highest level, having worked as India’s interim head coach several times when Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir were unavailable,” Ramesh observed.

Having spent years mentoring young talent at the National Cricket Academy and handling India’s developmental squads, Laxman has earned widespread praise for his calm leadership and player management skills.

What CSK must do to revive their IPL fortunes

Replacing Fleming will be only one part of a much bigger rebuilding project. CSK endured one of their poorest IPL campaigns in 2026, finishing eighth on the points table and missing the playoffs for a third straight season. The franchise struggled with recurring injuries, an aging core, and an underperforming bowling attack throughout the tournament. The absence of Dhoni for the entire season because of multiple injuries further complicated the transition to Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s full-time captaincy during Fleming’s final campaign.

Looking ahead to IPL 2027, CSK are expected to be aggressive in both the mini-auction and the trade window. Reports have linked the franchise with a potential move for an elite Indian all-rounder such as Hardik Pandya, while the increased salary cap of ₹157 crore provides greater flexibility to reshape the squad.

A new coaching staff will also be expected to modernize the scouting setup, strengthen the pace-bowling department with quality overseas quicks, and redefine player roles. If Dhoni remains involved in a specialist Impact Player capacity while also contributing to the leadership group, CSK could blend experience with fresh ideas as they aim to restore their dominance at Chepauk.
