Former DCEU Hero’s Confirmed Return In Superman Movie Sequel Man Of Tomorrow Is Perfect

Man of Tomorrow has just been confirmed to bring back a DCEU hero, and it is the perfect update for Superman and others in their fight against Brainiac. James Gunn’s Superman movie was a winning first theatrical effort for the DCU. It established a wide universe with several heroes, as David Corenswet’s Superman and the Justice Gang made their debuts.

Man of Tomorrow‘s story will once again feature all of those characters, with Superman, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and the Green Lantern Guy Gardner all coming back. They will not be the only ones on the Man of Steel’s side against Brainiac, who is the main villain of the Superman sequel. Joining them are Milly Alcock’s Supergirl, Aaron Pierre’s Green Lantern John Stewart, and more.

Brainiac is such a major threat that it makes sense for all of these heroes to be involved with the film. Even Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is confirmed to be working with Superman in the upcoming DC movie. Characters like Wonder Woman, Batman, and Martian Manhunter are also rumored to appear. Now, we know of another hero that will show up in the film.

After debuting in the old DCEU movie timeline, Xolo Maridueña will reportedly return as Blue Beetle in Man of Tomorrow, as per a new update from The Wrap. Other stars from the DCEU have already joined Gunn’s DCU as their characters, including several Peacemaker characters. Blue Beetle’s DCU return had already been confirmed by Gunn, but his first project back was unknown, and it is perfect.

Blue Beetle Could Be A Secret Weapon Against Brainiac

The sheer scope of Man of Tomorrow can already be felt a year out from the DC movie’s release. Brainiac is being built up as a massive foe, given the number of powerful DC heroes Gunn is assembling to join Superman against him. Blue Beetle is not more powerful than characters like Superman, Supergirl, or the Green Lanterns. That said, Jaime Reyes’ DCU debut is perfect, as he could end up having the knowledge of how to defeat the alien. After all, Jaime gets his powers from his scarab, which is also a cosmic being of great intelligence.

Blue Beetle’s scarab, Khaji Da, might have some knowledge about Brainiac or even have had a run-in with the DC villain in the past before it bonded with Jaime. It stands to reason that if Brainiac has the same mission he does in the comics and other adaptations, which is bottling cities from several different worlds in his search for infinite knowledge, then he has made a mark in this new DCU. As such, a powerful cosmic being like the scarab should hold some idea about how to deal with the villain.

We Already Know Where Blue Beetle Should Appear Next In The DCU

Man of Tomorrow is far from the only DCU project Blue Beetle should appear in. In fact, we already knew about another DCU appearance for the character before Maridueña’s return in the Superman movie sequel was reported to be happening. The actor will return in another solo project. However, given how the DCEU Blue Beetle movie underperformed at the box office, it will not be another film. Instead, Maridueña is set to reprise his DC hero role in a Blue Beetle animated series. At this time, no story details or a release date have been revealed for the show.

Besides those two DCU projects, Blue Beetle could also show up in another movie that is in development at DC Studios. Supergirl scribe Ana Nogueira is also set to pen a Teen Titans movie. At 25 and able to pass as younger, Maridueña could easily be part of the young cast of that film. Additionally, Blue Beetle has been a member of the Teen Titans in the comics, and by appearing in such a high-profile project as Man of Tomorrow, Gunn could be setting him up for a major role in the franchise going forward.
