Forget GTA 6, This Gorgeous RPG Is My Most Anticipated Game Of 2026

As excited as I am for Grand Theft Auto 6, there is one gorgeous RPG that has already become my most anticipated game of 2026. Next year is building up to be a memorable period for video games. The highly anticipated release of GTA 6 should be the biggest of 2026, and possibly, the decade, if you consider how successful its predecessor was.

Of course, this is not the only big game to be released next year. In 2026, players will see the release of the new Fable by Playground Games, as well as 007 First Light by IO Interactive. The release of The Duskbloods for Nintendo Switch 2 is also slated for 2026. Most recently, Square Enix revealed a beautiful RPG for next year.

The Adventures Of Elliot: The Millennium Tales Is My Most Anticipated Game Of 2026

The HD-2D Game Is An Action RPG By Square Enix

Revealed during July’s Nintendo Direct, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is a new RPG and easily my most anticipated game of 2026. Like the turn-based RPGs from the Octopath Traveler series and the tactical RPG Triangle Strategy, for example, The Adventures of Elliot is an HD-2D game, but an action RPG.

The HD-2D style that Square Enix has now exported to several of its titles, including the upcoming Dragon Quest HD-2D Remakes, is mesmerizing. The gorgeous scenarios you get to explore add to the reasons to play these games. Now, as a big fan of the aforementioned HD-2D games, this style is being applied to an action RPG, which is something I’ve long been waiting to see.

You Can Already Test The Action RPG

Some select players can now test The Adventures of Elliot, as the Debut Demo is available on Nintendo Switch 2. Of course, this demo only contains a small portion of what is to be a much larger game, but you can get a sense of how gameplay will work as you control Elliot and his fairy ally, Faie.

The demo allows you to better understand the real-time action-based combat, as well as how exploration will work. Unfortunately, the Debut Demo is not available on other platforms – at least, for now. Like a lot of Square Enix’s demos, the demo for The Adventures of Elliot is a fairly generous one, offering over an hour of gameplay.

The game is held as a spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger in the sense that the story being told spans over a thousand years – hence The Millennium Tales in its title. You won’t be able to grasp much about how the story will unfold in the demo, but just enough to understand what type of adventure awaits you in 2026.

The Adventures of Elliot will be released for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (via Steam and Microsoft Store). A concrete release date should be shared in the future. While its details are still somewhat scarce, the game’s premise and HD-2D style have already bumped this RPG into my most anticipated game of 2026.
