Final Fantasy 9 Officially Returns September 2026 For 25th Anniversary

Final Fantasy 9 is often hailed as one of the best games in the series, and it isn’t hard to see why. However, despite being a truly tremendous release and offering a remarkably memorable narrative, little has been done with it outside of a few cameos for its core cast and appearances in crossovers. It’s a shame, especially considering just how much potential there is for a Final Fantasy 9 remaster or even remake, the latter being a project fans would absolutely love to see.

Of course, there were the 25th anniversary celebrations last year, which only helped further fuel all the rampant FF9 remake leaks and speculation. Square Enix released several new Final Fantasy 9-related projects for the anniversary celebrations, the vast majority of which were warmly received by fans. Fortunately, despite the celebrations having ended several months ago, Square Enix still has one more project left to unveil that fans will absolutely want to check out.

While there has been acknowledgment of an FF9 remake from Square Enix, this new project is sadly not that. It would be remarkable for the studio to announce and subsequently release a full-blown remake of a beloved Final Fantasy game within the span of a few weeks, even if that would be an incredible turn of events for fans. Rather, this new project is simply another nod to the game that fans will likely want to get in order to complete their collection.

Joining the vast selection of other upcoming Final Fantasy 9 projects is FF9 Reclusion, a new 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle that depicts the game’s antagonist, Kuja, standing alongside the Silver Dragon inside the iconic Lifa Tree. It joins the previously released FF9 jigsaw puzzles, which also feature gorgeous art of beloved characters in iconic locations. Naturally, this means there’s a bit of a collection forming that Final Fantasy 9 devotees may want to complete.

The Final Fantasy 9 Reclusion jigsaw puzzle is listed as a 25th anniversary product, despite the game celebrating its 25th anniversary last year. Still, it is great to see Square Enix continue to showcase its affection for the game through the various merchandise releases, and that there are further opportunities for fans to illustrate their unwavering support for the game. While it’ll likely do little to get a remake of FF9 into production, if the puzzle appeals to you, then it’ll be worth getting.

If you are interested, the Final Fantasy 9 Reclusion jigsaw puzzle is available for pre-order right now. It costs $39.99 and is available for purchase via the official Square Enix website. It is expected to be released this month (September 2026), although a specific release date has yet to be confirmed. There will undoubtedly be even more pieces of FF9 merchandise released in the future, even if it isn’t for the 25th anniversary celebrations. So, dedicated Final Fantasy 9 fans should keep their eyes peeled, perhaps while even completing this massive new jigsaw puzzle.
