Felicia Day’s bringing her web series The Guild back in a whole new format, and everything is lining up for it to be epic. Before scripted YouTube shows were a major thing, Felicia Day premiered a web series called The Guild that brought realistic geek and gaming culture to the screen, focusing on a group of MMORPG players who created relationships online and suddenly found themselves trying to navigate real life. The show was released for free, making it accessible to anyone who found comfort in the story and characters.

In a bold move, Day added a PayPal button to The Guild website, allowing folks to contribute to the production costs if they so wished. Unsurprisingly, the fans turned out, making it one of the first big crowdfunded projects before Kickstarter existed. The donations were enough to fund the entire rest of the first season. Now, with the 20th anniversary coming up next year, The Guild is back at it again as a movie instead of a TV show, and the change of format feels like the perfect way to honor what was while also elevating the celebration.

I’ll be completely upfront about my bias here. I have been a fan of Felicia Day’s work since Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, The Guild, and early Geek and Sundry. I watched The Guild obsessively when it came out. As such, I immediately subscribed to the newsletter the moment the 20th anniversary movie was announced, and I enthusiastically followed along leading up to the Kickstarter campaign launch. Now that it’s up and running, we have so much more information to share about what to expect.

Why Felicia Day Chose To Create A 20th Anniversary Movie Of The Guild

The Guild movie is absolutely thrilling, and the reason behind Felicia Day making it, other than the 20th anniversary coming up, is two-pronged: love for the show and spite towards Hollywood. During Felicia Day’s panel at Denver Fan Expo 2026, where I was present on behalf of Screen Rant, the brilliant multi-hyphenate actor revealed that she received a phone call from a Hollywood producer asking to reboot The Guild with younger actors. This request understandably sparked a fire in her. This show was her creative baby, and they were trying to recast her. From a fan’s perspective, it also would have continued the trend of unnecessary reboots. Sure, some elements of The Guild are out of date, especially as gaming culture has changed in the past 20 years. But that doesn’t mean it needs to be completely remade.

On the 12 Hour Stream-a-thon for the Kickstarter, which was done on Twitch and posted to YouTube, Felicia Day explained the circumstances further.

“About a year and a half ago, a Hollywood executive called me…It was a fancy producer who wanted to talk about The Guild, and I was like, “Oh my god, after all these years of kind of being marginalized, nobody really being impressed with what we’ve done building all this stuff from the ground up, kind of feeling like I was not relevant anymore. And I was excited for them to call and be interested in The Guild. I was so excited, and all they wanted to do was reboot it with younger actors. And I was so upset because I already felt like I was thrown away by this industry, and all the things I did were really just nothing in their eyes. I was determined to make a movie, and of course, I dream of like shoving it in their faces a little bit, but this is beyond anything I could dream of.”

As mentioned, the Kickstarter far exceeded all expectations from the very beginning. Prior to launch, they broke the record for the most followed movie pre-release on the platform. About three hours and fifteen minutes into their campaign, at which point I was signing up, they exceeded their goal of $1.5 million. Since then, they have broken these three big records:

Clearly, the passion for The Guild is just as present now as it was 20 years ago. Fans are more than happy to shell out money to see the reunion of their favorite actors and characters. What’s more, the Kickstarter feels like a callback to the original show. Plus, the approach makes it feel like it’s our movie just as much as it is the Day’s and the rest of the creative team’s. Every one of us who donated to Kickstarter is helping make this a reality.

What To Expect From The Guild’s 20th Anniversary Movie

So far, the specifics of the storyline are being kept under tight wraps, but a few major details have been revealed to get audiences excited. First things first, all the original members of The Knights of Good are returning for the movie. Second, The Guild is going to Ren Faire! It’s not clear exactly how or why, but a guild of gamers going to a Renaissance faire together feels like just the right amount of geeky. Pretty much every geek I know, including myself, loves a good ren-faire.

On top of that, fans can expect to see a few exciting faces. When Felicia Day launched the Kickstarter, she mentioned that the movie would include multiple cameos. While she stayed quiet about most, three guest stars have been confirmed. Ben Sheridan will play Wiggly. Tara Caso will play Dena, and Wil Wheaton will return as the one-and-only Fawkes. More details will be released as time goes on, but so far, the return of The Guild sounds amazing as hoped.
