Expected line-ups, preview, stats and where to watch as Red Devils take on former boss Amorim

Manchester United will reunite with former boss Ruben Amorim when they face AC Milan in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday.

Amorim presided over a largely underwhelming period at Old Trafford before being sacked in January with Michael Carrick taking over, initially on a caretaker basis, and leading a resurgence that ended in a third-placed finish and Champions League qualification.

The Portuguese will be desperate to get one over on his former employers in the Polish city of Wroclaw for two reasons: prove they were premature to dismiss him and also quieten the noise around his current position after a rocky pre-season campaign.

Milan have yet to win in three warm-up games, drawing with Celtic and Inter Milan and losing 3-0 to Chelsea, producing a performance in Jakarta that attracted plenty of criticism in Italy.

Things have been much smoother for United with one defeat in five and they appear to be in a good place heading into the new season.

Carrick’s transfer business has been solid, if unspectacular, and the former England midfielder is hoping to bring in a couple more players before the window closes on September 1.

He told the Daily Mail: “I think we’ve got a pretty good balance in all when you lay the squad out, but of course we would like more. We would like more, we need to keep pushing for more.

“There’s one or two areas where we’d like to improve and we feel that there’s the possibility to improve, but again, that needs to be something that we can do that makes us better and improves the group, whether that’s quality or whether that’s a little bit of depth. That’s something we’ve got to manage. That’s pretty obvious.”

Barcelona forward Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford is back with the squad and could make his first United appearance since December 2024 against the Rossoneri. The former Barcelona loanee was expected to play some part against Leeds on Wednesday night but was not named in the squad.

Rashford fell out of favour at United under Amorim and Carrick admits it is exciting to have a player of his quality back with the group.

He added: “He’s a very good player, Marcus, and I think if you’re going to have a career over 10 or 15 years, there’s going to be times when things go in maybe a different direction.

“Now we’re in a positive place as a group, and Marcus can offer us so much.

“He has done [in the past], and he can do again, so in that respect, it’s quite exciting.”

Team News for Manchester United v AC Milan

Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez could all be on the bench after being reintegrated into the squad following their post-World Cup breaks.

Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans are likely to start after coming on against Leeds in midweek.

Milan have no injury problems although goalkeeper Mike Maignan has yet to resume training. Winger Christopher Nkunku is unlikely to feature after being told he can leave San Siro.
