ENG vs IND [WATCH]: Eoin Morgan backs Vaibhav Suryavanshi despite debut snub in the first T20I

The highly anticipated T20I series opener between England and India at Chester-le-Street on July 1, 2026, promised fireworks but ultimately ended in a damp squib as persistent rain forced a premature abandonment. While the erratic British weather stole the headlines on the field, a massive talking point off it was the debut denial of India’s 15-year-old batting sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Despite making waves globally and dominating headlines following a record-shattering Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign, the teenage prodigy was left out of the playing XI, sparking widespread debate among pundits and fans alike.

Eoin Morgan reacts after Vaibhav Suryavanshi misses out on T20I debut

Former England World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan heavily backed the young prodigy, urging fans and management not to rush the cricketer despite his undeniable, generational talent.

Reflecting on Suryavanshi’s meteoric rise, Morgan stated on Sky Sports: “It’s the second season running where [Vaibhav Suryavanshi] has just done things that I have never seen a batter do alone, regardless of what age you are. But to do it as a 15-year-old is just absolutely mind-boggling. You know, he hit more sixes than anybody has ever hit in this year’s IPL. He went past Chris Gayle’s record that had been long-standing for 10 or 12 years, or something ridiculous like that, scoring over 700 runs against the very best bowlers. They could not find a way of bowling at him.”

While many expressed disappointment that the teenager didn’t get his cap in the series opener, Morgan offered a grounded perspective on how India should manage their prized asset. “When it comes to handling his future, which undoubtedly, he’s going to have a long international future ahead of him, I would not be putting a time pressure or timeline on it. When an opportunity comes around, he will be ready regardless,” he added, emphasizing patience over hype.

Rain forces abandonment of England-India first T20I

When play was possible, India’s batting lineup showcased intense aggression mixed with sudden collapses, ultimately posting a competitive 189/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

The innings got off to a disastrous start. Saqib Mahmood struck early by removing Sanju Samson for just 17 runs off 8 balls, while a costly mix-up led to Ishan Kishan being run out for a two-ball duck, leaving India reeling at 6/2 within the first two overs.

However, Abhishek Sharma turned the tide with a blistering counter-attack. The dynamic opener slammed 59 runs off just 24 balls, bringing up his half-century in a mere 20 deliveries. Alongside captain Shreyas Iyer, Abhishek stitched together a rapid 82-run partnership before being trapped leg-before-wicket (lbw) by Sam Curran.

Iyer anchored the middle overs with a captain’s knock of 68 from 47 balls, anchoring the innings despite losing Tilak Varma (13) and Harshit Rana (0) cheaply. A late-order cameo from Shivam Dube, who remained unbeaten on 42 off 21 balls, pushed India’s total to a strong 189. For England, Mahmood was the pick of the bowlers, returning impressive figures of 3/33 in his 4 overs. Unfortunately for the packed crowd at Chester-le-Street, the weather turned entirely sour during the innings break, preventing England from ever starting their chase and leaving the match with a frustrating ‘No Result’.
