Later this year, Denis Villeneuve will return audiences around the world to Arrakis to continue Paul Atreides’ story, and in doing so, Dune: Part Three will change the sci-fi epic’s genre. From the moment the acclaimed director got his hands on Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi novels, Villeneuve has made sure to deliver faithful adaptations that also swing for the fences and wow viewers on the big screen.

Dune 3 will be no different from the previous two Dune movies in that regard. The sequel boasts one of the trilogy’s best casts, led by Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, and Javier Bardem returning alongside new additions like Robert Pattinson. And with Villeneuve back at the helm, there’s no reason to question its potential as a cinematic achievement.

The early look at Dune 3‘s trailer confirmed that the planned final installment in this franchise will once again deliver a high-spectacle blockbuster. There will be more political intrigue, sandworm action, gorgeous visuals, and other hallmarks of the Dune movies, increasing the likelihood that fans of the first two will be pleased with the newest chapter, even as it dives into weirder source material.

To deliver the best possible result, Villeneuve is switching things up with Dune 3 and embracing a completely different genre. The sci-fi roots are still present, but the director has confirmed that the threequel will be more of an action thriller rather than retain the approach the franchise has used before.

Dune 3 Is An Action-Heavy Thriller

The genre change for Dune is noticeable by looking at the first trailer, but this isn’t an example of clever marketing teams making the movie look like something it isn’t. Villeneuve has confirmed that Dune 3 is going to be a completely different type of movie than what audiences have seen before. As he revealed at the Dune 3 trailer launch event ScreenRant attended in March 2026, “This one is a thriller. It’s a more action-packed and tense film; more muscular, I would say.”

The director’s decision to describe Dune 3 as a thriller came from him explaining how different the movie will be. The first Dune was essentially a coming-of-age sci-fi story, just one with a messiah-like figure that was more contemplative, according to Villeneuve. Conversely, Dune 2 embraced being more akin to classic war movies as Paul leads the Fremen to freedom and ascends to the galactic throne.

Dune 3 won’t abandon everything audiences know and love about this series. Villeneuve insisted Paul and Chani’s love story remains the heartbeat of the movie. But he also noted how this one has “a different tone, a different rhythm, a different pace” from the previous movies. The director’s desire to make a third entry feel fresh even led him to bring in different creative partners, such as cinematographer Linus Sandgren.

The action thriller pivot for Dune 3 makes perfect sense, too. There is an entire political conspiracy element to the Dune Messiah book that the movie is at least partially adapting, which fits well as a thriller. And with glimpses of the Holy War and what all transpires from Paul’s reign, going even bigger on the action is sensible, too.

Denis Villeneuve Is Perfect For Handling Dune 3’s New Genre

For some, Dune tackling a new genre may seem like an unnecessary risk. The first two movies were incredibly successful (over $1 billion in box office receipts, both critically acclaimed on Rotten Tomatoes). It would have been very easy for Dune 3 to stay true to what has worked before and where Villeneuve has proven to be quite comfortable in this realm.

But this will not be the director’s first foray into this genre. Villeneuve mastered making thrillers years before he ever brought his talents to Arrakis. 2013’s Prisoners is perhaps the greatest example of his filmography, as the crime movie’s tense mystery builds to an unforgettable finale. Enemy is more psychological in nature, but also shows his ability to work within this landscape.

The more action-heavy elements that Dune 3 will include more so invite comparisons to Sicario. The 2015 movie is just as thrilling as it is packed to the brim with action. It’s a masterclass of combining a tense story that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats as different stories unfold and weaving in pulse-pounding set pieces.

As one of the best directors working today, if anyone was going to attempt a genre switch like this for Dune, the franchise couldn’t ask for a better person to do it than Villeneuve. He will have no trouble utilizing the best elements of these types of stories and tones to make something that isn’t just different for the sake of being different.

Dune Becoming An Action Thriller Completes A Franchise Transformation

After all, it is more common than it might seem for movie franchises to fluctuate between various genres. But the results do not always justify the means. The action thriller approach for Dune 3 is one that should.

The first two movies have their share of thrilling scenes. How Paul navigates his place in the world, the plot against Duke Leto, and the presence of the Bene Gesserit are but a few examples of how Dune has tapped into thriller genre before. But the films have always stopped short of fully embracing that side of this world.

Similarly, both films have delivered jaw-dropping action sequences. Duncan Idaho’s skills, epic sandworm rides, Feyd-Rautha’s gladiator arena fights, and Paul’s participation in raids against the Harkonnen forces only scratch the surface of all the memorable combat scenes the previous installments had. But neither was completely focused on this element; there was actually very little pure action in the first Dune.

From the way Villeneuve has described Dune 3, this will be the movie that finally brings both of these genres to the forefront. The franchise has been slowly building to this type of transformation, giving audiences a taste of what will come in the final entry as they’ve experienced the first two parts.

Based on how incredibly the director has handled action and thriller elements before (including beyond this franchise), Dune: Part Three‘s genre change will certainly be earned. And in doing so, the sci-fi series may wind up concluding on the biggest and best note.
