Dominik Szoboszlai pens five-year extension at Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai says he is “never happy” and remains determined to win everything possible with Liverpool after signing a new five-year contract at Anfield.

The Hungary captain has committed his future to the club until 2031, ending months of speculation surrounding his long-term future after negotiations between his representatives and Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes.

Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in a £60 million move in 2023 and enjoyed the best season of his career last term, scoring 13 goals and providing 12 assists in all competitions.

But the 25-year-old insists he is far from satisfied with what he has achieved so far.

“There’s always more to come. I’m never happy,” Szoboszlai said after signing his new deal.

“I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can.”

The midfielder added that his ambitions have not changed since the day he arrived on Merseyside two years ago.

“When I signed, I said I want to win everything,” he said.

“That didn’t change for a little moment either. It stayed the same.

“I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League.

“I’m ready to go for it.”

Liverpool secure a key long-term future

Szoboszlai had two years remaining on his previous contract, but talks over an extension accelerated in recent weeks before an agreement was finalised this week.

Liverpool believe the midfielder’s best years are still ahead of him, while the player himself has repeatedly spoken about his desire to become a leading figure in the squad.

His performances last season underlined his growing importance to the team, with the Hungarian emerging as Liverpool’s standout player across the campaign.

Former team-mate Mohamed Salah was among those to praise Szoboszlai’s impact, describing him in February as “one of the best players in the world”.

Vice-captaincy role could await

With Andy Robertson leaving Anfield this summer, Liverpool are expected to appoint a new vice-captain ahead of the new season.

Szoboszlai is regarded as one of the leading candidates for the role, having captained Hungary for several years and established himself as one of the senior figures within the Liverpool dressing room.

The midfielder returned to Merseyside on Tuesday to begin pre-season preparations and will travel with Andoni Iraola’s squad for next week’s tour of the United States as Liverpool step up preparations for the new campaign.
