Devil May Cry's Original Creator Demolishes Netflix Series Backlash With 5 Words

Merely days ahead of Devil May Cry’s thrilling second season debut on Netflix, there have been understandably some detractors, a predictable issue with game adaptations. While the series can reasonably be critiqued for elements of its writing and hilariously excessive edginess, misguided outrage is being directed at the harmless, if cheeky, social media bio for the show’s creator, Adi Shankar. But beyond an Instagram post in which he declares himself as creator of Devil May Cry on Netflix, which is factually true, some have resorted to trying to rope the original game’s director and creator Hideki Kamiya into the “controversy”.

Much like with netizens of yesteryear trying to recruit 4chan users to join their social media flame wars, disgruntled Devil May Cry fans found themselves going nowhere quick by trying to engage Kamiya via his X (formerly Twitter) account. What started as a call to essentially tell off Shankar for what is effectively just promoting the series he’s putting on Netflix, was promptly dismissed in predictable fashion by the veteran video game designer. All it took for Kamiya to respond to this was five brutally efficient words, “I’m not your damn mom,” to set the tone for just how much this issue mattered.

Kamiya’s response to calls for comment on Shankar’s promotion have dated back to season 1’s release a year ago, with similarly blunt rejections at inquiries on his opinions about the show. This comes directly alongside his earnest interest in remaking the first Devil May Cry game from the ground up with modern game tech. But in this particular case, after claims accusing Shankar of labeling himself the creator of the franchise, Kamiya reminded fans that the concern is minuscule, stating to “quit comin’ cryin’ to me about every little thing.”

Admittedly, out of context, Shankar’s promotions including appearing in costume with Dante’s signature Ebony & Ivory pistols can come off a bit much. But that’s also his brand, and something with which Kamiya has apparently taken little issue in dismissing as not his problem, citing that he stands to make no money from such an anime anyway.

With Shankar speaking of trauma being the final boss for Devil May Cry upon the release of season 1, fans were perhaps dismayed by the almost nerfed depiction of its star Dante. Not only will he meaningfully reunite with and confront his brother Vergil, but Shankar spoke on season 2 mere months after season 1’s release, reiterating plans to “level up” Dante, and that part of the experience is seeing the character grow into the badass icon fans know and love. This came before other, more hype-loaded tweets suggesting Devil May Cry season 2 will be “on the level of The Dark Knight”.

Berserk may be getting a new anime series, and this time it could be by an American studio with Netflix’s Castlevania producer at the helm.

While it’s certainly intended to communicate a jump in scale from season 1’s proverbial Batman Begins to season 2’s status, it also sets lofty expectations for viewers hoping to see something truly special. Given Shankar’s particular attachment to the project, it’s no wonder he heavily promotes it, and is all the more peculiar when, despite it having little bearing on the game franchise’s future, fans are tripping over themselves to try and get previous developers to essentially put him in his place.
