DCU Officially Confirms Green Lantern’s History With Batman

Batman gets teased again for the new DC Universe, only this time, DC Studios has confirmed Green Lantern’s history with the Dark Knight. Batman is DC’s most popular hero, which is easy to see by just how many more live-action movies he has compared to other DC heroes, as well as just how much money they have made at the box office.

Over the years, Batman’s movies have featured a couple of Bat-Family members here and there. That said, the only live-action version of Batman on the big screen that really got to interact with other DC heroes not from Gotham City was Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne from the old DCEU movie timeline. He was the Batman who appeared in DC’s first Justice League movie.

Through Affleck’s iteration, DC fans got to see Batman in the same frame as Superman, Wonder Woman, and many other heroes. Now, the hope is that it will not take too long for that to be repeated in James Gunn’s DC Universe. Batman will lead the announced The Brave and the Bold movie, but casting for the role has yet to start.

01

Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. Cartoonist Bob Kane received sole credit for creating the character for the next 76 years — on every comic, every TV series, every film — despite being only half of the real partnership. His uncredited collaborator wrote much of the original story, designed the cowl and cape, invented the name “Bruce Wayne,” named Gotham City, and helped create the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler and Catwoman. DC finally added his name to all Batman credits in 2015. Who?

02

Batman: The Movie — released in July 1966 between the first and second seasons of the ABC TV series, featuring the “Holy Whatever, Batman!” tone, the four super-villain team-up (Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman), the shark-repellent Bat-spray, and the Batmobile/Batboat/Batcopter — is generally considered the first theatrical Batman feature film. Two earlier 1940s movie serials don’t qualify as standalone features. Which actor played Batman in this first theatrical feature?

03

Batman: The Animated Series (Fox Kids, 1992–1995) — the Bruce Timm/Eric Radomski production with the deco-noir “Dark Deco” backgrounds painted on black paper — is consistently ranked by fans and creators as the definitive screen Batman. Its central performance is so iconic that the actor reprised it across 30 years, every DC Animated Universe series, and a dozen Arkham-series video games. He died on November 10, 2022, and DC essentially treated his passing as the death of Batman’s voice. Name him.

04

Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) earned him an estimated $60–$90 million from a film for which his actual on-screen salary was a fairly modest $6 million — making it, dollar-for-dollar, one of the most famously lucrative single roles in Hollywood history. He achieved this by negotiating an unusual deal structure that other actors immediately tried (and largely failed) to copy. What was it?

05

After Ben Affleck stepped down from his planned solo Batman film, Warner Bros. handed the project to a new director who reconceived it as a noir-detective serial-killer story modelled on Se7en and Zodiac, runs 2h 56min, casts Robert Pattinson as a brooding second-year Bruce Wayne, and gives Paul Dano’s Riddler a Zodiac-style cipher gimmick. The Batman (2022) grossed $772 million worldwide. Who directed it?

06

Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin (1997) — with Bat-nipples on the suit, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze spitting ice puns (“Let’s kick some ice!”), Uma Thurman’s Poison Ivy, Alicia Silverstone’s Batgirl, and an estimated $238 million box-office failure on a $125 million budget — is widely regarded as one of the worst superhero films ever made. It killed the live-action Batman franchise for eight years until Batman Begins (2005). Who played Batman in it?

07

Cesar Romero’s Joker on the 1966–1968 ABC Batman series — white grease-paint, green wig, red lipstick, manic giggle — remains one of the most-cited comedic TV villains in American history. Romero, a leading-man matinée idol since the 1930s, agreed to the role on one condition: he refused to do a specific thing for the makeup. You can still see what he refused if you look closely. What did Romero refuse?

08

Todd Phillips’s Joker (2019) — the standalone, R-rated, $1.07-billion-grossing Joaquin Phoenix vehicle that exists outside any DC continuity — was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, the most of any comic-book-derived film at the time. It won Best Actor for Phoenix. It also won exactly one other Oscar that night. Which?

World’s Greatest Detective — or a Gotham red herring?

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for HBO’s Lanterns episode 6.As fans patiently wait for more information about the DCU Batman movie and who will play the Dark Knight, Lanterns episode 6 just teased Bruce Wayne’s role in the DCU. Batman’s latest mention in the franchise came with a two-punch reveal that establishes the Dark Knight’s history with multiple Green Lanterns in the shared universe.

Lanterns Expands Its Gotham City Connections With A Batman Mention

No, Batman does not appear in Lanterns episode 6. However, Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan directly mentions the Dark Knight. When Hal and John Stewart are talking at the diner in Rushville near the start of the episode in the 2026 DCU timeline, Hal starts talking about Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, who ended up being his Green Lantern replacement after John passed on the Guardians of the Universe’s offer in the 2016 timeline at the end of Lanterns episode 5. Hal talks about how Guy copied Batman’s Bat-Signal, creating his own Green Lantern signal in Rushville.

Hal’s exact words are that Guy copied “that bat guy in Gotham,” which is clearly about Batman. As such, Lanterns has confirmed Batman’s history with two Green Lanterns. Based on how Hal is a veteran DCU hero with decades of experience, the fact that he is well aware of who Batman is suggests that the two might have already met at some point.

As for Guy, if Fillion’s Green Lantern has not met the Dark Knight, he is at the very least aware of Batman’s existence, as he copied the Bat-Signal. This continues Lanterns‘ previous Gotham City connection, which was that Sheriff Kerry came from Gotham and had the Kane surname, the maiden name of Bruce Wayne’s mother, and the last name of his famous cousin, Kate Kane, aka Batwoman.

Could We Ever See Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan With The DCU Batman?

Lanterns is a project that has used multiple timelines to explore the rich history in the DCU. Given how Hal’s comments suggest that he might have already met Batman, there is a chance that this could be shown as a flashback at some point in the DCU. That said, given how Lanterns episode 6 seems to maintain the notion that Hal Jordan is truly dead in the 2026 DCU timeline, aka the present day, it is hard to imagine Batman and Hal sharing screen time in the franchise.

Instead, whenever Batman shows up in the DCU, John Stewart and Guy Gardner are the most likely Green Lanterns for him to show up with, be it in theaters or on the small screen. With both Guy and John in the Superman movie sequel Man of Tomorrow, which is rumored to also see Wonder Woman make her DCU debut, played by Adria Arjona, it would make sense for the franchise’s Batman to appear and help stop Brainiac. That said, there is no indication that Batman will be in the film, but Lanterns, at the very least, is teasing that he is very much present and inspiring other heroes in the DCU’s current timeline.
