DC Names Superman and Batman’s Official Replacements in Mainstream Lore

For 85 years, Batman and Superman have claimed the title of “World’s Finest.” However, this summer DC is shaking things up and has revealed the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight’s replacements, and the choice is nothing short of shocking. Instead of a Robin or Superman’s own son stepping into the role, DC is taking a very different route, one that is far more surprising but undeniably epic.

The now iconic “World’s Finest” title first appeared in the spring of 1941, shortly after the launch of World’s Best Comics #1, with the title being renamed World’s Finest Comics starting with issue #2. The early issues starred Batman and Superman, though the two heroes typically appeared in separate stories. It wasn’t until 1954 that the two heroes began regularly teaming up in the same story, resulting in the phrase “World’s Finest” quickly becoming shorthand for the pair and cementing the nickname.

That iconic nickname remains strong in the modern era, with DC even publishing an ongoing Batman / Superman: World’s Finest title featuring the two heroes. Writer Mark Waid and artist Dan Mora launched the series together, and while Mora still occasionally returns as a guest artist and provides the phenomenal main covers, he has since stepped away from the regular interior art. Even so, the series remains one of DC’s most beloved titles and continues to reinforce the association between the “World’s Finest” label and Batman and Superman.

However, it appears that “World’s Finest” will soon be used to describe a very different duo, as DC names Superman and Batman’s official replacements in the upcoming Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2026 Annual #1.

Set to release on July 29, 2026, the oversized summer special Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2026 Annual #1 comes from writers Mark Waid, Mark Russell, and Tyrone Finch, and artists Clayton Henry and Pat Boutin. The issue will see the elder Jonathan Kent and Alfred Pennyworth step in as Superman and Batman’s official replacements.

88 Years Later, Superman Has Officially Lost His Title Of DC’s Most Powerful Hero

After 88 years as DC’s most powerful hero, Superman has been unseated by a brand-new hero whose diverse ability set may surpass anything seen before.

It is important to remember that while the World’s Finest series is part of official canon, it takes place in the past. This past setting makes it possible for Alfred to participate in the narrative, given that he is dead in present-day continuity and has remained so for seven years now, despite DC often reversing major character deaths.

According to the official synopsis for the special, Jonathan and Alfred stepping in for Superman and Batman occurs when Bruce and Clark attempt to have “a relaxing night out with Jonathan Kent and Alfred.” However, when an emergency leads Batman and Superman into a trap, Alfred and Jonathan are forced to fill the sudden World’s Finest vacancy.

Both Alfred and Pa Kent are beloved characters among DC fans, making this an especially intriguing premise that will likely be met with a positive reception. The story also marks the return of Alfred in a canon narrative, something readers have rarely seen since the character’s death seven years ago.

Dan Mora’s main cover for the issue further fuels excitement. It depicts Alfred and Pa Kent standing atop a rooftop while a spotlight combining the symbols of Batman and Superman shines across the night sky. Seeing these two father figures step into the action to fill in for their sons promises to be nothing short of epic, redefining the title of “World’s Finest,” at least for this one issue.

Furthermore, Mora’s cover shows Alfred and Jonathan in their usual attire, though it will be interesting to see whether the two don special costumes for the story. While it seems unlikely that Pa Kent will wear the Superman suit, it is possible that Alfred could commandeer some ability-enhancing suits from the Batcave for both himself and Kent, giving them a much-needed edge as they attempt to fill in for Batman and Superman.
