Dave Bautista has a Prime Video series on the horizon, one which brings his career full circle. Bautista has become known as one of the better wrestler-turned-actors, be it his work in various Marvel movies or his appearances under acclaimed directors like Sam Mendes, Rian Johnson, and Denis Villeneuve. Undoubtedly, it was his role as Drax the Destroyer in the MCU that catapulted Bautista into mainstream stardom, but his acting chops have only improved since then.

Now, the choice for the best wrestler-turned-actor often comes down to John Cena or Dave Bautista, and both continue to impress. Where Bautista is concerned, there is a big franchise on the horizon, coming from Prime Video. Although it is unlikely to be on the same level as Marvel or James Bond for the actor, Bautista was confirmed as the lead for Prime Video’s God of War adaptation. For decades, Bautista has been fancasted as the titular god, Kratos, an ancient Greek deity who took on the pantheon in revenge for the deaths of his family.

This version of the character was featured in the original video game trilogy, but Prime Video’s TV adaptation will be different. The latter will be based on 2018’s God of War, a soft reboot of the video game franchise that takes place decades after the original trilogy, with Kratos now retired and living away from Greece, in the realm of the Norse gods. Bautista will bring the rebooted story to life, playing a somewhat mellower Kratos than the rageful god of the original trilogy as he faces a new fight: fatherhood.

Bautista will be joined by Callum Vinson as Atreus, Kratos’ young son, as the two embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, the mother of Atreus and wife of Kratos. 2018’s God of War was revered for how it reinvented the character of Kratos into one of the deepest in the modern gaming scene. With that in mind, this is a perfect role for Bautista to flex not only the action abilities he is known to have, but his more emotional, nuanced acting abilities, all while bringing a long fancast full circle.

Despite Years Of Fancast, Dave Bautista’s God Of War Role Was Surprising

Ironically, Bautista’s role in God of War was unexpected, even given the years-long claims for him to play Kratos. Initially, another actor was cast as Kratos: Ryan Hurst. Hurst was revealed as the lead in Prime Video’s adaptation in January 2026 and even filmed four episodes between February and June of that year. However, Hurst injured his bicep on set, and the recovery time forced Prime Video to make the difficult choice of recasting Kratos.

This led to Bautista fulfilling years of fancasting by being added to the show as Kratos, taking Hurst’s place. Due to the aging of Callum Vinson during this period, Prime Video revealed that all footage captured thus far for God of War would need to be completely reshot with Bautista as Kratos. The news was certainly shocking and disappointing, especially for Hurst, but Bautista is admittedly one of the better choices Prime Video could have made to bring a strong, stoic, yet more emotionally vulnerable Kratos to light.

God Of War Should Bring Hurst In Another Role

Despite this casting shake-up, Prime Video has the opportunity to bring back Ryan Hurst. It has already been confirmed that God of War will be two seasons, which will adapt 2018’s game and its sequel, God of War: Ragnarök. Interestingly, the latter game featured Hurst in a voice-acting and motion-capture role as Thor, the Norse god of thunder. However, God of War has already cast Thor for season 1, with Severance‘s Ólafur Darri Ólafsson playing the hammer-wielding drunkard, meaning Hurst cannot reprise that role in live-action.

That said, God of War will likely include the story of Kratos’ past in Greece via flashbacks and dream sequences, just as the 2018 game did. As a TV show, Prime Video’s God of War has even more time to do this, meaning major antagonists of Kratos’ past like Zeus or Ares could appear in bigger roles than they did in the 2018 game. Either of these roles could be perfect for Hurst; Ares has a neat thematic connection as the god of war whom Kratos replaced, with Bautista doing the same to Hurst, possibly making this the best way the unlucky actor could return in Prime Video’s God of War.
