Chuck Lorre has spent decades turning unconventional characters and complicated family dynamics into some of television’s biggest sitcoms. From Two and a Half Men to The Big Bang Theory, the prolific creator has built a reputation for comedies that can attract enormous audiences while occasionally pushing the boundaries of the traditional sitcom. His more recent projects have taken that formula in some unexpected directions.

One of Lorre’s latest streaming comedies has now returned for its second season, and it didn’t take long for viewers to find it again. The series is already sitting inside Netflix’s Top 10 TV shows in the U.S., giving Lorre another streaming success to add to his increasingly impressive resume.

Lorre’s Leanne Season 2 Is Off To A Strong Start On Netflix

Leanne returned to Netflix on August 27 with its second season, bringing back Leanne Morgan, Kristen Johnston, Celia Weston, and the rest of the sitcom’s ensemble. Created by Morgan, Lorre, and Susan McMartin, the series follows a southern woman rebuilding her life after her husband leaves her for another woman. Netflix lists the show as having two seasons, with season 2 consisting of 10 episodes.

The timing of the return has clearly worked in the show’s favor. According to FlixPatrol’s September 4 Netflix chart, Leanne ranked No. 4 among the most-watched TV shows on Netflix in the United States, putting it ahead of titles including Outer Banks, Talamasca: The Secret Order, and Tires. It remained in the U.S. Top 10 throughout the week.

Leanne is competing against some pretty established Netflix franchises, but the show’s continued presence on the chart suggests that its audience has followed the sitcom into its second season rather than treating it as a one-season curiosity.

Lorre Holds The Streaming Crown On Multiple Platforms

Leanne’s success is proof that Lorre has figured out how to make his particular brand of sitcom work in an increasingly fragmented television landscape. While his biggest successes were traditionally associated with broadcast television, his recent projects have found audiences on streaming platforms as well, despite critics being unconvinced.

That transition was not necessarily guaranteed for Leanne. The sitcom uses the traditional multi-camera format that helped define much of Lorre’s career at a time when streaming audiences have increasingly gravitated toward serialized dramas, prestige comedies, and shorter-form series. Yet the show’s performance has helped make the case that there is still an appetite for a straightforward, character-driven sitcom.

Now that the second season is here, its early Netflix performance gives Lorre another reason to feel confident about the show’s future. Leanne may not have arrived with the same immediate cultural footprint as some of Netflix’s biggest original series, but landing at No. 4 on the U.S. TV chart less than two weeks after its sophomore season’s premiere is a pretty convincing argument that viewers haven’t lost interest.
