Chelsea wanted Berge on deadline day

Chelsea made a late approach to sign Fulham star Sander Berge after failing to land Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, according to BBC Sport.

The west London giants parted ways with Enzo Fernandez on deadline day. The Argentine made the switch to Manchester City after a long transfer saga.

Camara was earmarked as the ideal replacement for the World Cup winner, but Monaco pulled the plug on a potential transfer before the deadline.

With barely minutes left on the clock, the London giants tried to pursue a last-gasp deal for Berge from Fulham, but were unsuccessful in doing so.

The Cottagers were quite clear that the Norwegian was not for sale this summer, and they maintained the same stance before the window closed.

Chelsea are currently short of quality in the heart of their midfield as Moises Caicedo remains on the sidelines with a lower-leg concern.

Blues boss Xabi Alonso wants to handle the Ecuadorian carefully and has vowed not to rush him back into action after the setback vs Brighton.
