Chelsea have made a move for Marcus Rashford as the England forward’s uncertain future at Manchester United threatens to become one of the defining stories of the summer transfer window.
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona after falling out of favour at Old Trafford, and although his time in Spain helped rebuild his reputation, a permanent move to Camp Nou is no longer straightforward. Barcelona have already signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for the left-sided attacking role, leaving Rashford in limbo despite a productive season under Hansi Flick.
The 28-year-old joined Barcelona needing a reset. His final period at Manchester United had become increasingly difficult, with form, confidence and his role in the team all under question. In Catalonia, he looked sharper, happier and more dangerous. He was not always an automatic starter, but he contributed goals, assists and high-level moments across the campaign, including important performances in La Liga and Europe.
Rashford’s pace in transition, ability to attack from the left and willingness to run beyond the defensive line gave Barcelona a different option. He also showed flashes of the directness that once made him one of the Premier League’s most feared forwards. There were still inconsistencies, and he was not quite the unstoppable version of himself from his best Manchester United years, but his loan spell did enough to remind clubs that he remains a serious attacking weapon.
Chelsea‘s interest is therefore understandable. The club have spent heavily on young forwards in recent windows, but they still lack a proven Premier League attacker who can carry immediate responsibility from wide areas. Rashford would bring experience, speed, goals and the ability to play across the front line. He is most comfortable from the left, cutting inside onto his right foot, but he can also play centrally when a side wants more movement behind the opposition defence.
Manchester United’s stance will be crucial. Rashford remains under contract until 2028, but his future at the club looks uncertain. United are believed to want a permanent sale rather than another loan, both to raise funds and to move on from one of the more complicated squad situations at Old Trafford. The fee could be around £26 million to £30 million, broadly in line with the option Barcelona held as part of the loan agreement.
For Chelsea, that price is attractive compared to the market for elite forwards. Rashford’s wages would be the larger issue, as he is one of Manchester United’s highest earners. Any deal would likely require careful negotiation, either through a reduced salary, performance-related structure or a compromise with United.
Arsenal are also monitoring the situation. Mikel Arteta has long admired versatile forwards who can play across multiple roles, and Rashford’s ability to cover both the left wing and centre-forward position makes him an obvious fit on paper. Arsenal‘s interest, however, may depend on their wider attacking plans and whether they prioritise a more traditional striker.
Barcelona have not completely closed the door, but the Gordon signing has changed the picture. The former Newcastle winger offers similar explosiveness, is younger, and has been recruited specifically for the wide attacking role Rashford filled last season. That makes a permanent Barcelona deal far less likely unless their squad planning shifts again.
Rashford’s decision may now stretch beyond the World Cup. A strong tournament with England could revive his market, increase United’s asking price and tempt more clubs into the race. Equally, he may prefer clarity before the competition begins, especially after a year in which stability helped him rediscover parts of his game.
