Brighton claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Premier League champions Liverpool thanks to Jack Hinshelwood’s late goal.

The Seagulls twice came from behind on Monday before Hinshelwood netted just 88 seconds after coming on, with his goal awarded after a VAR check confirmed assister Matt O’Riley was not offside.

Another substitute had already played a key role for Brighton before then, with Kaoru Mitoma having dragged the hosts level for the second time in the 69th minute.

Harvey Elliott had put Liverpool ahead nine minutes in, with Yasin Ayari restoring parity before Dominik Szoboszlai netted with a cross-shot on the stroke of half-time.

Matters could have been very different had Mohamed Salah, on his 400th Liverpool appearance and his 300th game in the Premier League overall, not slashed wide of a gaping goal early in the second half.

Brighton sit eighth heading into their final game of the season against Tottenham, meaning a point on Sunday could well be enough to secure European football next season, though that will rely on several other factors going their way.

Brighton have now come back to win three Premier League games this season when trailing at half-time, with only Fulham doing so more often (five).

Liverpool, meanwhile, are the first side to be crowned Premier League champions and then fail to win their next three games in the competition in the same season (D2 L1).

The Reds, whose coach Arne Slot left Virgil van Dijk on the bench, did start brightly with that goal from Elliott, meaning they have now scored in all 19 of their away games in the top flight this season. They became just the third side in Premier League history to score in 100% of their away games in a single campaign after both Arsenal and Manchester United did so in 2001-02.

Brighton, though, will feel they were worthy winners, with Fabian Hurzeler’s team having generated 2.34 expected goals from 25 shots, 12 of which were on target, while Liverpool finished with 2.11 xG from 18 attempts as they lost a league game in which they had been leading at half-time for the first time since December 2016.
