After a hit-and-miss couple of years, Marvel Studios finally has two guaranteed blockbuster hits lined up this year. Over the holiday season, even the most casual viewer is likely to buy a ticket to see Avengers: Doomsday throw the entire multiverse at the wall and see what sticks. But before that, on July 31, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to dominate the summer box office. Its only real competition will be Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, also starring Tom Holland and Zendaya.
Any Spider-Man movie is bound to be a home run, but Brand New Day’s incredible trailer brought the hype for this one to a whole new level. It’s tackling the tragic implications of No Way Home’s ending head-on, and it’s jam-packed with exciting supporting characters (maybe too many, but that remains to be seen). It looks like director Destin Daniel Cretton has a really unique and distinctive take on the character and this bleak juncture in his story, and between Shang-Chi and Wonder Man, Cretton has a spotless track record in the MCU so far.
There are still two months to go before Spidey swings back into cinemas, and the wait will be interminable. If you can’t bear to wait until the end of July for your next fix, Marvel is about to drop a new special presentation on Disney+ that’ll act as a kind of prologue to Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The Punisher: One Last Kill Drops On Disney+ On May 12
A few days ago, Daredevil: Born Again ended its incredible second season with a near-perfect finale episode. Born Again’s second season stuck the landing at almost every turn, from Daredevil’s showdown with the Kingpin in his lair to Matt Murdock’s showdown with Mayor Fisk in court, and it made up for the scarcity of action in the early episodes with a full season’s worth of bloodshed and mayhem in the last 20 minutes of the finale. But if there was one major let-down in the season, it was the absence of Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle.
Bernthal’s Frank was one of the saving graces of Daredevil: Born Again’s rough first season, so it was pretty disappointing when season 2 benched him. But we’re about to get the best consolation prize imaginable: a full hour of Punisher action. On May 12, Marvel Studios is set to release an hour-long special called The Punisher: One Last Kill. Bernthal isn’t just reprising his role as Frank in the special; he co-wrote the script with director Reinaldo Marcus Green, so it’s clearly a passion project for the actor. Hopefully, one day, Netflix’s cancelled Punisher show will get the Born Again treatment. But until then, this’ll do.
As teased by that awesome trailer, the Punisher will have a supporting role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Bernthal’s Frank will fight crime alongside Holland’s Spidey and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk in a fantastical PG-13 setting, and it’ll be interesting to see how the character fits into that kind of movie. We might see a glimpse of it in One Last Kill, because the special will more than likely lead into the events of Brand New Day.
One Last Kill Will Lead Into Spider-Man: Brand New Day
One Last Kill takes place during the events of Born Again season 2, and Brand New Day takes place after Born Again season 2 (which we only know because Sheila from Born Again appears in the Brand New Day trailer). So, by the transitive property, One Last Kill must take place before Brand New Day.
The special sees Frank trying to let go of his vengeful rage and his Punisher alter ego before being drawn back into his vigilante crusade. Once he’s drawn back in, we could see how he ends up working with Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
