FromSoftware seemingly doesn’t really make bad games in any capacity, but few have managed to capture the public imagination in quite the same way that Bloodborne did when it dropped in 2015. The PlayStation 4 was a great console, and if you ask players for the first game that comes to mind when they think of it, for many it will be their adventures in Yharnam.
As such, it still feels really bizarre that the game hasn’t been brought back for more players in some form. Whether that’s with a remaster for recent consoles, or even an official PC port to let players have at it, nothing has been forthcoming. That said, it is possible to get the game running on your home computer via emulation, and if you do, there’s a new mod that you’ll definitely want to be aware of.
Over on Nexus Mods, you should be able to find the download page for HardBorne which, as the name might suggest, makes the game considerably more challenging than the already tough baseline difficulty of the game. Beyond that, though, the mod is actually a lot bigger and more ambitious than simply tuning the enemies to make them more tough.
In fact, the mod adds an entirely original story to the game, replacing the original narrative as a pseudo-sequel. The mod author descirbes the content as follows:
“HardBorne – The New Old Blood is an overhaul mod that takes place a few years after the events of the first game. A new character called Nevel has taken Laurence’s experiment even further and has unleashed upon Yharnam a new and more deadly plague and it is your job to piece together what happened as you fight your way through the new hordes of enemies and challenges! Figure out the mystery of there things went after the first game ended and you might even meet the man himself!”
It’s a fascinating premise and one that should appeal to those who have played the base game cover to cover, repeatedly. In total, the author estimates that the download adds another 15–25 hours of new activities to work through. It also adds a bunch of items and tools that should give you more ways than ever to interact with enemies and beat the game.
As with most mods, the download over on Nexus Mods is entirely free, so there’s no risk to downloading it and giving it a go via a PS4 emulator. It is currently in beta though, so there may be a few bugs and glitches along the way. You’ll also want to make sure that you have a legit copy of the game on PS4 as well, just to make sure everything is above board.
Unfortunately, there is little sign of FromSoftware changing their position on the original Bloodborne in any meaningful capacity. Our only faint sliver of hope is that they one day return to the franchise and deliver a sequel, though that will likely be a long way away, if it ever does come.
