Bangladesh appoint new captain ahead of ODI World Cup 2027

Bangladesh have appointed experienced wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das as the new captain of their ODI side, marking a significant shift in the team’s leadership plans ahead of the 2027 World Cup. The announcement was confirmed by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Tamim Iqbal following a board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Das, who already leads Bangladesh in T20 Internationals, replaces Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the ODI skipper. The appointment comes after the BCB decided to move away from its previous format-specific captaincy model and instead adopt a two-captain structure across international cricket.

Under the revised arrangement, Litton Das will oversee Bangladesh’s white-ball teams in both ODIs and T20Is, while Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue to captain the Test side. Young batter Towhid Hridoy has been named vice-captain for both limited-overs formats, whereas Mehidy Hasan Miraz will retain his role as the deputy in Test cricket.

Bangladesh hope fresh leadership sparks revival

The leadership change comes after Bangladesh endured a difficult run in ODI cricket under Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Appointed captain in June last year, Miraz struggled to inspire the side, with the Tigers registering only two victories in 13 away ODIs during his tenure.

With the World Cup less than two years away, the Bangladesh board appears determined to reset the team’s direction before qualification and preparation enter their crucial phases. Litton Das, one of Bangladesh’s most experienced batters, will now shoulder the responsibility of rebuilding confidence and establishing a winning culture in the limited-overs setup.

The decision also gives Bangladesh continuity across white-ball cricket, allowing the same leadership group to shape strategies in both ODIs and T20Is. With Towhid Hridoy emerging as vice-captain and several young players becoming regulars, the Tigers will hope the new structure creates greater stability and helps them produce stronger performances as they build towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
