Atalanta ‘stunned’ Man Utd pulled out of Ederson deal

Atalanta director of sport Cristiano Giuntoli admitted the club were “stunned” after Ederson’s move to Manchester United fell through.

Ederson had looked set to join United back in June, with the clubs reportedly agreeing a €45m deal including add-ons.

However, Ederson was subsequently called up to Brazil’s World Cup squad, with the medical tests then taking place following their elimination from the tournament.

United claimed that significant problems with his knee had been found and thus pulled out of the move, and have since reportedly finalised a deal with Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans.

Despite what United said, Atalanta insist they still have full faith in Ederson, with the Red Devils’ decision coming as a surprise.

“We were stunned,” confessed Giuntoli during a press conference.

“He is happy to remain [at Atalanta], and we are working on a new contract.”

Ederson joined Atalanta in July 2022 from Salernitana, making 180 appearances in all competitions and netting 16 goals.

He was part of the team that won the Europa League in 2023-24, as well as finishing as a runner-up in the Coppa Italia that season.

In 2025-26, he made the fourth-most passes in all competitions among Atalanta players (1,849) and had the fourth-most touches (2,432), but none of his team-mates won back possession more often than him (189).
