Arsenal have decided against pursuing a deal for Lyon winger Malick Fofana before the transfer deadline tonight.
The Gunners explored a deal for the Belgian earlier on Monday, and it was reported that the player was pushing to join the Premier League champions.
However, the club have opted not to proceed with negotiations. First of all, they are reluctant to pay the reported €35m fee requested by Les Gones.
On top of this, the Gunners prefer a loan deal with an option to buy. Manager Mikel Arteta is also not convinced by the qualities of the 21-year-old.
Hence, Arsenal have now pulled out of the hunt for the former Gent man, but he could still end up in the Premier League with Crystal Palace or Sunderland.
Both clubs are negotiating commissions with the player’s agency, and it could come down to which side is prepared to offer more before the window closes.
Fofana is expected to be sold before the transfer deadline at 11pm, as Lyon desperately need funds after the financial hit from missing out on Champions League qualification.
